Salt miner Seleine Mines – a division of K+S Windsor Salt – has been fined C$400 000 for violating environmental laws in 2014.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says Seleine Mines had disposed of dredged material on four occasions in 2014, outside of the disposal area authorised by its disposal at sea permit.
Certain non-hazardous wastes can be considered for disposal at sea, but it requires a permit that ensures the disposal is the most practical and environment-friendly option.
