Caterpillar Foundation commits $8.5m to support Covid-19 fight

Caterpillar Foundation, the philanthropic arm of NYSE-listed Caterpillar, on Monday announced an $8.5-million commitment to support global communities, including underserved populations, who are affected by the fast-spreading coronavirus. The foundation's investment will support nonprofit organisations, which are working to help prevent, detect and respond to the pandemic, providing resources to hospitals, medical staff and patients, addressing food insecurity and enabling online STEM and coding education for youth impacted by school closures.

ISS and Glass Lewis support Excellon’s Otis Gold buy

Two independent proxy advisory firms Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) and Glass Lewis and Co have each recommended that shareholders in TSX-listed Excellon Resources approve the proposed acquisition of Otis Gold. ISS and Glass Lewis said that transaction made sense for Excellon shareholders as the combined entity would have a more diversified portfolio of assets, consisting of Excellon’s high-grade Platosa silver mine and Otis’ Kilgore gold development project.

Detour Lake worker tests positive for Covid-19

Canadian gold miner Kirkland Lake has suspended nonessential work and visits to the Detour Lake mine site, in Ontario, after a worker tested positive for Covid-19. The company said at the weekend that the worker arrived on the mine site on March 12, began showing symptoms and self-isolated on March 14. The workers was taken from the site on the morning of March 16. Kirkland said that employees were told to be particularly vigilant in self-monitoring for signs of symptoms.

Agnico Eagle sends Nunavut workers home to protect communities

Gold miner Agnico Eagle Mines has sent home its Nunavut-based work force (Nunavummiut) from the Meliadine and Meadowbank operations, as well as the exploration projects, for four weeks to protect the communities from the coronavirus. Agnico Eagle will also be meeting with its Nunavut contractors to discuss similar measures involving their Nunavummiut workers. “We value our relationship with the people of Nunavut and are committed to do what is best for the health, safety and well-being of all our employees and the communities,” said Agnico CEO Sean Boyd.

Stewart leaves as McEwen president and COO

NYSE- and TSX-listed McEwen Mining announced on Wednesday that Chris Stewart had left his position as president and COO, two days after the company reported its fourth-quarter and year-end results for 2019. The company has failed to deliver on its operational forecasts in 2019 and executive chairperson and chief owner, Rob McEwen, earlier this week apologised to the investment community for not having delivered.
