Replacing diesel machines with zero-emitting fuel cell electrical equipment can lower the cost of underground mine ventilation, says Hydrogen Infrastructure (HySA) director Dr Dmitri Bessarabov, who adds that renewable hydrogen can also be used to mitigate air pollution at Eskom power stations. HySA, which has a clean mining ventilation test facility and which has been developing considerable relevant expertise in anticipation of the emergence of the hydrogen economy, has been successfully operating a solar-to-hydrogen system in South Africa since 2013.
