Gold prices are modestly down in early-afternoon U.S. trading Tuesday. A dovish monetary policy presentation to the Senate by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell could not give gold and silver prices any boost.

Gold and silver prices are trading near unchanged in late-morning dealings Tuesday, and have erased modest early losses.

Gold prices dipped after a Conference Board report showing that the U.S. February consumer confidence index rose to 131.4 from a revised 121.7 in January. Spot gold was last down $3 to $1,324.10 an ounce.

Gold prices are modestly down in early U.S. trading Tuesday. The bulls need a new fundamental news spark, amid the recent upbeat trader and investor attitudes that have pulled buyers away from the safe-haven metals.

While gold is softer so far Tuesday, the outlook for the metal remains favorable, says Lukman Otunuga, research analyst at FXTM. Shortly before 8 a.m. EST, spot gold was $3.90 lower to $1,323.20 an ounce.
