{"id":944891,"date":"2018-08-21T10:26:31","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T10:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=944891"},"modified":"2018-08-21T10:26:31","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T10:26:31","slug":"harmony-gold-swings-to-loss-sees-deaths-at-operations-mount-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=944891","title":{"rendered":"Harmony Gold swings to loss, sees deaths at operations mount"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/harmony-gold-swings-loss-sees-deaths-operations-mount\/\">Cecilia Jamasmie<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>Harmony Gold (JSE:HAR) (NYSE:HMY), the world&#8217;s fifth largest producer of the precious metal, swung to a net loss for fiscal 2018 after booking impairment costs at a number of its mines, as well as an additional loss due to foreign-currency effects.<\/p>\n<p>The South African gold miner <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harmony.co.za\/invest\/company-announcements\/2018\/item\/989-harmony-delivers\" rel=\"noopener\">posted a 43% drop in annual earnings<\/a>, or a 4.47 billion South African rand loss (about $309 million), compared to a net profit of 362 million rand in fiscal 2017.<\/p>\n<p>It also revealed a significant setback in terms of safety at its operations, with 13 workers killed in the 12-month period to June 30, compared to just five in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Headline earnings per share came in at 171 cents, in line with what it had previously flagged to the market, from 298 cents a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Harmony&#8217;s total gold output increased 13% to 1.22 million ounces.
