Worldwide zinc production swooned between 2015 and 2017 dropping 23 per cent.<\/p>\n

According to Mining Intelligence<\/a>, zinc production by publicly-traded mining companies in 2015 was 9,769 kilotonnes. Figures don’t include production in China, which is responsible for 40% of global mine production<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After the rug was pulled out<\/a> from under base metals mid-decade, worldwide zinc production at publicly-traded companies declined<\/a> and totaled 7,592 kilotonnes in 2017.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Data is annual zinc production reported by publicly-traded companies, as well as some state-owned mines. Excluded are private mines. Stock exchanges used are TSX, TSX-V, ASX, LSE, LSE-AIM, NYSE and JSE.<\/p>\n

The top five countries for zinc production in 2017 were Peru (1,021kto), United States (831kto), Australia (829kto), Mexico (674kto) and India (601kto).<\/p>\n

The top five mines for zinc production in 2017 were the following:<\/p>\n

  1. Vedanta’s Rampura Agucha<\/strong> reporting 568.72 kilotonnes<\/li>\n
  2. Teck’s Red Dog<\/strong> reporting 541.90 kilotonnes<\/li>\n
  3. Glencore and BHP Billiton’s Antamina<\/strong> reporting 319.95 kilotonnes<\/li>\n
  4. Teck’s Trail<\/strong> reporting 310.10 kilotonnes<\/li>\n
  5. China Molybdenum’s Kokkola<\/strong> reporting 284.99 kilotonnes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Total mines reporting zinc output in 2017 was 96.<\/p>\n

    There were only 11 mines with production greater than 200 kilotonnes annually.<\/p>\n

    The average zinc annual production in 2017 was 79 kilotonnes.<\/p>\n

    After years of bust, zinc is currently in its boom phase<\/a> of the cycle.
