{"id":789612,"date":"2018-06-22T09:25:08","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T09:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=789612"},"modified":"2018-06-22T09:25:08","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T09:25:08","slug":"volkwagen-invests-usd100m-in-solid-state-battery-research-firm-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=789612","title":{"rendered":"Volkwagen invests USD$100m in solid-state battery research firm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/volkwagen-invests-usd100m-solid-state-battery-research-firm\/\">Michael Allan McCrae<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.volkswagenag.com\/en\/news\/2018\/06\/volkswagen-partners-with-quantumscape-.html\">Volkswagen is investing USD$100m in QuantumScape<\/a> to accelerate the commercialization of its solid-state battery business.<\/p>\n<p>Solid-state batteries are a rival technology to lithium-ion batteries with advantages such as higher energy density, enhanced safety, fast-charging capability and significantly less space requirements.<\/p>\n<p>A successful solid state battery <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/alternatives-to-cobalt-the-blood-diamond-of-batteries\/\">could potentially decrease the need for cobalt<\/a>. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solid-state_battery\">Materials being tested to run solid-state batteries<\/a> include ceramics, glass and lithium sulfide.<\/p>\n<p>QuantumScape&#8217;s CEO touted the investment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVolkswagen is the world&#8217;s largest automotive manufacturer and leads the industry in its commitment to electrification of its fleet,\u201d says Jagdeep Singh, CEO of QuantumScape, in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.volkswagenag.com\/en\/news\/2018\/06\/volkswagen-partners-with-quantumscape-.html\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to be chosen by Volkswagen to power this transition.
