{"id":750302,"date":"2018-06-07T12:58:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T12:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=750302"},"modified":"2018-06-07T12:58:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T12:58:00","slug":"rio-tinto-signs-jv-exploration-deal-with-chinas-minmetals-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=750302","title":{"rendered":"Rio Tinto signs JV exploration deal with China\u2019s Minmetals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/rio-tinto-signs-jv-exploration-deal-chinas-minmetals\/\">Cecilia Jamasmie<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>World&#8217;s No. 2 miner Rio Tinto (ASX, LON:RIO) has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/media\/media-releases-237_25531.aspx\" rel=\"noopener\">joined forces with Minmetals<\/a>, one of the biggest Chinese mining companies, to explore for mineral deposits first in the Asian country and then the rest of the world .<\/p>\n<p>The 50-50 joint venture with state-backed Minmetals follows a technical <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/media\/media-releases-237_23613.aspx\" rel=\"noopener\">agreement signed in Novembe<\/a>r, when both parties committed to collaborative search for new ore bodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe formalization of the exploration joint venture is an important milestone in our growing partnership with China and Minmetals, who is an increasingly important player in the global mining industry,\u201d Rio Tinto&#8217;s chief executive, Jean-S\u00e9bastien Jacques, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/media\/media-releases-237_25531.aspx\" rel=\"noopener\">said in the statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><q>The joint venture will look for new mineral deposits first in China and then the rest of the world.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>The registered capital of the venture will be $31.3 million, with initial contributions of $5.5 million by each of the companies within six months of establishment of the venture, Rio Tinto said.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership replaces a long-running exploration venture Rio terminated last year with its largest shareholder, Aluminum Corporation of China.<\/p>\n<p>Minmetals, which mostly produces copper, zinc and nickel, but also holds reserves of iron ore, has increased its reach as of late.<\/p>\n<p>The company is the majority shareholder in Australian-based miner MMG, which operates the giant Las Bambas copper mine in Peru.
