{"id":733683,"date":"2018-05-31T21:00:28","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T21:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=733683"},"modified":"2018-05-31T21:00:28","modified_gmt":"2018-05-31T21:00:28","slug":"early-stage-copper-projects-have-grades-one-third-below-operating-mines-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=733683","title":{"rendered":"Early stage copper projects have grades one-third below operating mines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/copper-supply-deficit-worse-think\/\">Michael Allan McCrae<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<div class=\"ftpimagefix\" style=\"float:left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/copper-supply-deficit-worse-think\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img_5b0f1831e8468.png\" alt=\"\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The next generation of copper mines will not only have less copper but sharply declining grades, according to a study by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/u1X633\">Mining Intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Operating mines currently have an average grade of 0.53% while copper projects under development have an average grade of 0.39%.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<hr>\n<p>The estimated total resource of copper projects in the pipeline are 106B tonnes, half the current resource total of existing mines.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img_5b0f00ab8b8a7.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Jennifer Leinart, Mining Intelligence analyst and vice president of CostMine, warns that copper prices will rise.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Miners are struggling with both lower grades and increasing operating costs,&#8221; says Jennifer Leinart, Mining Intelligence analyst and vice president of CostMine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lower grades mean moving more rocks which in turn will require more diesel fuel and explosives, making the metal more expensive to produce.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer estimates that fuel, lubricants and explosives can make up 25% of operating costs, based on today&#8217;s prices and using a 40,000 tonne per day open pit copper mine as an example.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Existing mines have been labouring under cost inflation,&#8221; says Leinart.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In 2007 the average operating cost per tonne of copper ore was $14. In 2017 it was $21.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/aurubis-expects-continued-strong-copper-market-confirms-outlook\/\">Copper demand<\/a> is not expected to slow in the medium-term.
