{"id":700150,"date":"2018-05-17T14:05:10","date_gmt":"2018-05-17T14:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=700150"},"modified":"2018-05-17T14:05:10","modified_gmt":"2018-05-17T14:05:10","slug":"anglo-close-to-selling-part-of-stake-in-giant-peruvian-copper-project-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=700150","title":{"rendered":"Anglo close to selling part of stake in giant Peruvian copper project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/anglo-close-selling-part-stake-giant-peruvian-copper-project\/\">Cecilia Jamasmie<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>Anglo American (LON:AAL) may sell close to 30% of its $5.5-billion Quellaveco project in southern Peru to Japanese companies, including Mitsubishi, which already has a 18% stake in the asset, considered the world&#8217;s next major copper mine.<\/p>\n<p>The miner, which has already invested over $1 billion in Quellaveco since acquiring the property in 1992, had said its board would not make a final investment decision until it has de-risked the project by reducing its 82% holding in the copper asset.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Mark Cutifani told investors last year he wanted to keep at least 51% of Quellaveco, which has the capacity to generate 225,000 tonnes of copper a year, adding he had been \u201cengaging\u201d with potential parties interested in joining the project.<\/p>\n<p>As an existing partner, Mitsubishi has an option to increase its stake in Quellaveco to 30%, sources familiar with the matter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-anglo-american-m-a-quellaveco\/anglo-looks-to-sell-peru-copper-stake-to-japanese-firms-sources-idUSKCN1II1SM\" rel=\"noopener\">told <em>Reuters<\/em><\/a> on Thursday.
