The market gods have stilled the troubled waters.<\/p>\n

The Dow Jones closed higher for the seventh straight day today.<\/p>\n

The index has surged some 1,300 points these past seven trading days.<\/p>\n

The S&P and the Nasdaq have followed in step.<\/p>\n

Wall Street’s \u201cfear gauge,\u201d VIX, has plunged below 13\u2014 its lowest reading since Feb. 1.<\/p>\n

Ten-year Treasury yields, meantime, have stabilized under 3%.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we are getting here is a series of breakouts,\u201d exults Art Cashin, UBS director of floor operations at the New York Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n

Adds JPMorgan’s Shawn Quigg:<\/p>\n

\n

The S&P 500 is now above its 100-day moving average, which, if sustained, would be a psychological \u201cwin\u201d for investors and could build further upside momentum for the U.S. markets.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

All is peace\u2026 once again.<\/p>\n

What has become of the recent market turbulence?<\/p>\n

Has a white dove landed in the Middle East?<\/p>\n

Have markets forgotten about a possible trade war?<\/p>\n

Or perhaps markets have weighed the risks\u2026 and come to terms with them.<\/p>\n

This is the apparent conclusion of Karyn Cavanaugh, senior market strategist at Voya Financial:<\/p>\n

\n

The bears need to hibernate for a while because it looks like most of the geopolitical news has been priced in\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Perhaps there is some justice in this view.<\/p>\n

U.S. and Chinese trade officials made evident progress last week in Beijing.<\/p>\n

And Washington will host fresh negotiations next week.<\/p>\n

Meantime, the two Koreas bat eyes at one another\u2026 reducing fears of a military clash.<\/p>\n

What about Iran?<\/p>\n

Trump has announced plans to withdraw from the nuclear deal.<\/p>\n

But markets appear to be taking the news in easy stride \u2014 for the time being at least.<\/p>\n

Maybe last Friday’s unemployment report provided the tonic to brighten investor moods.<\/p>\n

The Labor Department claimed unemployment dropped to 3.9%\u2026 its lowest point in 20 years.<\/p>\n

Jim Giaquinto from Zacks reports:<\/p>\n

\n

It looks like the \u201cgoldilocks\u201d jobs report last Friday may have gone a long way in helping the market to relax and take a breath.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Then we come to corporate earnings\u2026<\/p>\n

So far, 90% of S&P 500 companies have reported earnings.<\/p>\n

Nearly 80% have exceeded expectations.<\/p>\n

Thomson Reuters informs us 64% is the historical average.<\/p>\n

Only 14% fell short of the expected glory.<\/p>\n

And positive earnings enable stock buybacks.<\/p>\n

S&P companies have purchased $158 billion of their own shares during the first quarter \u2014 a record pace.<\/p>\n

And The Wall Street Journal<\/i> informs us:<\/p>\n

Of the 20 S&P 500 companies that spent the most on buybacks over the first quarter, nearly three-quarters have outperformed the index so far this year. The group has risen an average of 5.2% in 2018, compared with the S&P 500’s 1.9% gain, according to a <\/i>Wall Street Journal analysis of S&P Dow Jones indexes data.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Apple, for example, announced a $100 billion buyback program last week.<\/p>\n

Its stock surged 13% the week following\u2026 and notched a 52-week high yesterday.<\/p>\n

Apple is the largest American company by market value. It therefore exerts an outsized influence on markets.<\/p>\n

Maybe this partly explains the latest stock market rally.<\/p>\n

Are stock buybacks a financial parlor trick?<\/p>\n

Yes, mostly.<\/p>\n

Do they reflect a corporation’s productivity?<\/p>\n

No, they do not.<\/p>\n

But they tend to lift the stock price \u2014 in the near run at least.<\/p>\n

And shareholders are flighty birds.<\/p>\n

They’ll wing off for greener opportunities if unsatisfied.<\/p>\n

Let the long run be tomorrow’s worry.<\/p>\n

So the question lingers in the air:<\/p>\n

Is the past week’s stock rally the sun peeking temporarily through the gloom?<\/p>\n

Or is the gloom scattering\u2026 and are blue skies returning?<\/p>\n
