{"id":672055,"date":"2018-05-04T16:50:58","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T16:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=672055"},"modified":"2018-05-04T16:50:58","modified_gmt":"2018-05-04T16:50:58","slug":"four-miners-dead-and-three-still-missing-at-sibanye-stillwater-mine-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=672055","title":{"rendered":"Four miners dead and three still missing at Sibanye-Stillwater mine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four miners have died, three remain stuck underground and two are still missing at one of Sibanye-Stillwater&#8217;s (JSE:SGL) (NYSE:SBGL) gold mines in South Africa following a quake caused a fall of ground Thursday, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/thirteen-trapped-underground-sibanye-gold-mine-following-seismic-event\/\" rel=\"noopener\">trapping a total of 13 workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two more quakes were felt Friday near the Masakhane mine, part of the company&#8217;s Driefontein operations, where three of the workers remained trapped and two unaccounted for.<\/p>\n<p>Mine fatalities increased last year in South Africa for the first time in a decade, as companies are having to go deeper in ageing shafts to access additional ore.<\/p>\n<p>Search and rescue operations were momentarily halted, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.enca.com\/south-africa\/at-least-four-dead-at-sibanye-stillwaters-driefontein-mine\" rel=\"noopener\">local media reported<\/a>, but have since resumed.<\/p>\n<p>The company <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thevault.exchange\/?get_group_doc=245\/1525415393-FurtherupdateonseismicincidentatDriefonteinoperations5May2018.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed its condolences<\/a> to friends and family of the four deceased employees, and thanked everyone involved in the rescue operations.<\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth accident at one of the company&#8217;s mines this year. In February, nearly 1,000 miners got stuck underground for more than 24 hours <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/sibanye-stillwater-trapped-miners-brought-surface-safely\/\" rel=\"noopener\">at Beatrix gold mine<\/a>, but were found unharmed.<\/p>\n<p>A few days later, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/second-accident-week-sibanye-mine-kills-two\/\" rel=\"noopener\">two miners died<\/a> after a section of the Kloof gold operation collapsed. Later that month, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/another-death-one-sibanye-stillwater-gold-mines\/\" rel=\"noopener\">another worker lost his life<\/a> while clearing a blocked ore pass at the company&#8217;s Driefontein gold operation.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa is home to some of the world&#8217;s deepest and most dangerous operations.
