Trump giveth\u2026 Trump taketh away.<\/p>\n

The post-election stock market ran further and further again, mostly because of the pretty plums Trump dangled in front of investors:<\/p>\n

Tax cuts\u2026 deregulation\u2026 infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Until last month’s \u201ccorrection,\u201d the overall market had swelled some 30% since that unforgettable night in November 2016.<\/p>\n

Has the president delivered the full cargo of goods \u2014 and on the appointed schedule?<\/p>\n

No, we must acknowledge in fairness, he has not.<\/p>\n

But the methane swamps of Washington are vicious wastes, drowning most who hazard the passage.<\/p>\n

And you must admit this much if nothing else:<\/p>\n

The president was able to paddle his tax cuts through to a safe shore.<\/p>\n

Meantime, the agents we’ve assigned such matters inform us he has taken the presidential ax to hundreds of useless government regulations.<\/p>\n

Here, as far as markets go\u2026 Trump giveth.<\/p>\n

Ah, but the Trump that giveth is also the Trump that taketh\u2026<\/p>\n

Trump shook the dust from his tariff blueprint earlier this month\u2026 and unfurled it before a watching world.<\/p>\n

Under its terms, steel and aluminum competitors the world over would feel a good hard pinch upon entering American shores.<\/p>\n

Due to their volume of metallic exports, such perennial hellcats as Canada and Brazil would take the brunt.<\/p>\n

The Dow Jones industrial plunged 420 points the day the news broke \u2014 and for cause.<\/p>\n

Tariffs invite counter tariffs.<\/p>\n

And markets believe a global trade war is bad for business.<\/p>\n

As we noted recently, Bloomberg Economics estimates a trade war could cost up to $470 billion in global GDP.<\/p>\n

Since the tariff unveiling, markets have been a seesaw affair\u2026 rising and falling at least in part on Mr. Trump’s passing fancies.<\/p>\n

Trump dangles tariff exemptions before Canada and Mexico and the stock market gets a bounce.<\/p>\n

He threatens universal tariffs unless the devils yield on NAFTA and stocks tumble.<\/p>\n

But yesterday, the president opened a new front in the global trade war\u2026<\/p>\n

Trump vowed retaliatory action against Chinese thieves of American intellectual property.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a tremendous intellectual property theft problem,\u201d said the president. Resolving it will make us \u201ca much stronger, much richer nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

It appears justice is with him.<\/p>\n

Estimates suggest Chinese piracy of U.S. intellectual property costs American business up to $600 billion per year.<\/p>\n

But markets are global citizens with loose attachments.<\/p>\n

Trade war is trade war \u2014 justice be damned.<\/p>\n

The Dow Jones plunged a ghastly 724 points on yesterday’s trade news.<\/p>\n

After yesterday’s trouncing, the Dow Jones occupied the same perch it occupied on Nov. 28.<\/p>\n

It ended today another 424 points lower.<\/p>\n

Four months of overall gains have therefore vanished into the ether.<\/p>\n

Where once Trump giveth with tax cuts and deregulation\u2026 Trump now taketh with trade.<\/p>\n

Overnight, China promised retaliation.<\/p>\n

$3 billion of American agricultural and steel products will confront 15\u201325% tariffs of their own.<\/p>\n

Ana Boata is the senior economist at trade credit insurer Euler Hermes.<\/p>\n

Ms. Boata estimates retaliatory Chinese tariffs could cost U.S. exporters up to $700 million.<\/p>\n

And so it goes.<\/p>\n

Are Trump’s trade adventures solely responsible for the stock market volatility now upon us?<\/p>\n

No, they are not.<\/p>\n

Remember, the Federal Reserve is also at \u2026read more<\/a> <\/p>\n
