Trump loses its economic helmsman\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Gary Cohn \u2014 lifelong Democrat, Goldman man and Trump&#8217;s chief economic adviser \u2014 is deserting his post.<\/p>\n<p>Cohn is widely considered the force behind Trump&#8217;s tax cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Absent Cohn&#8217;s steady rudder\u2026 many fear the economic ship will take a perilous heading.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s trade warriors like adviser Peter Navarro will rise in his place.<\/p>\n<p>Protectionism and a global trade war is next, howl the critics, another Smoot-Hawley.<\/p>\n<p>One unnamed White House official told Politico:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Gary gone, I just think, from a policy perspective, it means disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael McCarthy, chief strategist at CMC Markets Asia Pacific, speaks for many, as quoted by Bloomberg:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s clear at the moment the markets are likely to price the worst-case scenario on tariffs\u201d\u2026 \u201cMarkets are very concerned about the impact on global growth,\u201d given the \u201cpotential for tit-for-tat\u201d protectionist moves in the wake of Europe&#8217;s retaliation threat following the move on U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Michael O&#8217;Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading Institutional Services, adds his voice to the rising chorus:<\/p>\n<p>Of all the Trump administration resignations, this will be the one most meaningful for markets\u2026 Cohn was the administration official financial markets had the most confidence in. This opens the environment up to a whole new wave of uncertainty. The likelihood of a trade war just jumped dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Dow futures plunged 450 points upon the news of Cohn&#8217;s announcement yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Board opened today 200 points down.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P and Nasdaq also opened lower.<\/p>\n<p>Markets surged later in the day when the White House announced that Canada and Mexico may be exempt from the tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>But then they fell again to close the day.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the day was\u2026 mixed.<\/p>\n<p>And so it goes.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, the happy mainstream consensus holds that coordinated global growth is jumping.<\/p>\n<p>But is it?<\/p>\n<p>Goldman now claims that \u201cglobal economic momentum\u201d has fallen to its lowest in two years.<\/p>\n<p>Seven of 10 components in its proprietary \u201cGlobal Leading Indicator\u201d slipped in February.<\/p>\n<p>Meantime, the U.S. manufacturing machine may be losing steam after a strong 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The Commerce Department reported yesterday that factory orders slipped 1.4% last month \u2014 the largest drop since last July.<\/p>\n<p>One swallow does not a summer make\u2026 and one month of declining data does not a recession make.<\/p>\n<p>But it may be a straw in the wind.<\/p>\n<p>Is global growth at \u201cpeak bullishness\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>UPFINA (previously TimeMoney.com):<\/p>\n<p>The best time to buy stocks is when the consensus is so negative that positive catalysts are ignored. We&#8217;re in the opposite scenario in the winter of 2018 as the narrative of a global synchronized recovery has been the consensus for six months. The forecast for the least amount of countries being in a recession ever in 2018 is probably a sign of peak bullishness.<\/p>\n<p>In that spirit we introduce Hernan Cortes Douglas, former senior economist at the IMF:<\/p>\n<p>Before contractions begin, macroeconomic flows always look fine.
