The gods’ sense of humor is vastly underappreciated\u2026<\/p>\n

For the past year President Trump has shimmied and crooned about the roaring stock market.<\/p>\n

He has made America Great Again\u2026 and the stock market has made America Rich Again.<\/p>\n

Sample quote, dated Jan. 5, 2018:<\/p>\n

Dow goes from 18,589 on November 9, 2016, to 25,075 today, for a new all-time Record. Jumped 1000 points in last 5 weeks, Record fastest 1000 point move in history. This is all about the Make America Great Again agenda\u2026<\/p>\n

But Mr. Trump fails to appreciate the capricious nature of gods\u2026<\/p>\n

Just as the president was warming for his first State of the Union address\u2026<\/p>\n

They hatched a plan\u2026 went to work\u2026 and sent the stock market crashing with a mighty thud.<\/p>\n

The Dow tumbled 177 points Monday.<\/p>\n

Then yesterday, the president’s big day, it plummeted 362 points.<\/p>\n

It was the market’s worst day in eight months.<\/p>\n

Taken together, Monday and Tuesday witnessed the Dow’s largest consecutive loss since June 2016 \u2014 when Britain voted for \u201cBrexit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meantime, the VIX, Wall Street’s \u201cfear gauge,\u201d crested 14 yesterday \u2014 for the first time since August.<\/p>\n

Against this tossing backdrop did the president address the nation last night\u2026<\/p>\n

We certainly took no pleasure in the business.<\/p>\n

But neither did we grieve for whatever money it cost us.<\/p>\n

We accept the nature of gods\u2026 and their Olympian capacity for mischief.<\/p>\n

Besides, it’s a dippy thing, when a president grabs too much credit for the stock market.<\/p>\n

The market that rises, we would remind the president\u2026 is also the market that falls.<\/p>\n

And the crowd that toasts him today is the mob that hauls him to the gallows tomorrow.<\/p>\n

But what implements of havoc did the gods employ this week?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main catalysts for the steep drop this week,\u201d USA Today informs us, \u201cwere investors opting to lock in profits after the big early-year rally and a sharp rise in long-term interest rates.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many investors simply took their money and ran as January winds to an end.<\/p>\n

And the sharp rise in long-term interest rates?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe yield on the 10-year Treasury note jumped as high as 2.74% Tuesday, its highest level since April 22, 2014. Wall Street is worried that higher borrowing costs could slow economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many experts believe a 3% yield on the 10-year Treasury is the proverbial line in the sand.<\/p>\n

At 2.74%\u2026 markets are beginning to notice (more on that in the days ahead).<\/p>\n

Also, health care stocks fell 2.1% on the day, dragging the overall market lower.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan are evidently angling to create an independent company to reduce health care costs for employees.<\/p>\n

And reduced health care costs subtract from the industry’s bottom line.<\/p>\n

But the larger question:<\/p>\n

Were the past two days a one-off bolt from Olympus\u2026 or the beginning of a tempest?<\/p>\n

A one-off bolt, say the experts:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this is your run-of-the-mill, brief pullback that’s limited to 3\u20135%,\u201d says technical analyst Ari Wald of Oppenheimer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think the assumption is the bull \u2026read more<\/a> <\/p>\n
