According to the newspaper\u2019s analysis, one fifth of Mexico\u2019s total land area is subject to mining concessions belonging to one company or another.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12537 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/geo-mexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/mining-concessions-screenshot-580x376.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of map from El Universal\" width=\"580\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The six companies holding the largest areas of concessions are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Altos Hornos de M\u00e9xico (364 concessions totaling 3208 hectares)<\/li>\n<li>Fresnillo PLC (1009; 1953)<\/li>\n<li>Industrias Pe\u00f1oles (922; 953)<\/li>\n<li>Minera Fresco (779; 889)<\/li>\n<li>Cascabel (116; 749)<\/li>\n<li>and Grupo M\u00e9xico (711; 607).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The map is probably the single most interesting graphic in the series. Zooming in (top left of map) allows the details of each concession to be viewed, including the concession holder, size of concession, minerals involved and whether or not the concession is \u201cactive\u201d. Is there a mining concession near you? You might be surprised.
