{"id":576934,"date":"2017-10-31T18:24:26","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T18:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=576934"},"modified":"2017-10-31T18:24:26","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T18:24:26","slug":"settlement-in-48-billion-lawsuit-against-bhp-vale-postponed-again-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=576934","title":{"rendered":"Settlement in $48 billion lawsuit against BHP, Vale postponed again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/juniormininganalyst.com\/settlement-in-48-billion-lawsuit-against-bhp-vale-postponed-again\/\">analyst<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p><span>By  <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/settlement-48-billion-lawsuit-bhp-vale-postponed\/\">Frik Els<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>A Brazilian court granted BHP Billiton and Vale an extension to November 16 to negotiate a final settlement on $47 billion in claims stemming from a deadly dam burst at their Samarco joint venture in the country two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>A settlement in the the civil lawsuit brought by Brazilian prosecutors against the two companies and Samarco for 155 billion reais (roughly $48 billion today) was originally scheduled for the end of June and later postponed to October 30.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate deal in March last year Vale and BHP reached a deal with Brazilian authorities and the mine owners agreeing to pay an estimated 24 billion reais or $6.2 billion spread out over several years to compensate victims and rehabilitate the environment.<\/p>\n<p>The disaster in Brazil&#8217;s Minas Gerais state that killed 19 people caused sludge to wash downstream into neighbouring state Esp\u00edrito Santo through remote mountain valleys reaching the Atlantic ocean 600 kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p>An analysts at London-based bank Investec <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2017\/10\/31\/bhp-billiton-earns-extension-samarco-settlement-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\">told the Telegraph<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot still to do in two weeks \u2013 call us cynical but we expect the date to be extended again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samarco Mineracao ceased operations after the tailings dam failure and there is no timetable for it to re-open. At 30 million tonnes per year before the disaster Samarco&#8217;s pelletizing operations supplied roughly one-fifth of the seaborne trade in the steelmaking raw material that attracts a premium price over iron ore fines and lump ore.
