Donald Trump says he’s \u201cvery, very close\u201d to making a decision\u2026<\/p>\n

The president is expected to nominate the next Federal Reserve chairman before winging off to Asia next week.<\/p>\n

Could his selection determine the outcome of his presidency?<\/p>\n

And if he botches it, will Trump join Bush the Elder as the only single-term president in nearly 40 years?<\/p>\n

Today we pry open the historical record\u2026 ransack the data\u2026 and weigh the evidence\u2026<\/p>\n

Our colleague Dave Gonigam has examined the relationship between presidents and the business cycle since 1980.<\/p>\n

His conclusion:<\/p>\n

Presidents Trump and Bush the Elder were the only two presidents to enter office inheriting multiyear economic expansions.<\/p>\n

Bush donned the purple six years and two months into an economic expansion.<\/p>\n

Meantime, Trump assumed office seven years and seven months into the current economic expansion.<\/p>\n

Dave’s researches reveal that the rest of the crop \u2014 Obama, Bush the Younger, Clinton and Reagan \u2014 all entered office when the economy was in recession, steaming into one, or steaming out of one.<\/p>\n

Bush the Elder’s recession waylaid him 18 months into office.<\/p>\n

Will Trump be waylaid with his own\u2026 and join Bush in the presidential outhouse?<\/p>\n

Last November, we offered red-handed evidence that Trump faced a 100% chance of recession not within his first 18 months\u2026 but his first 12.<\/p>\n

This evidence drew upon executive history ranging all the way to 1910:<\/p>\n

Since 1910, the U.S. economy is either in recession or enters a recession within 12 months in every single instance at the end of a two-term presidency\u2026 effecting a 100% chance of recession for the new president\u2026 <\/p>\n

Only two presidents in history did not see a recession, and they were inaugurated after single-term presidents.<\/p>\n

Trump’s presidency has now entered its ninth month\u2026 and its fifth day.<\/p>\n

Our investigations yield no evidence that the U.S. economy is in recession at this time.<\/p>\n

If the U.S. economy does not enter recession within the next three months\u2026 President Trump will have scotched 100 years of presidential history.<\/p>\n

But can he scotch the recent 37?<\/p>\n

If Trump wishes to avoid a duplicate fate as Bush the Elder, we suggest he choose his Fed chair well\u2026<\/p>\n

As Dave reminds us\u2026<\/p>\n

In July 1991, Bush nominated the sitting Fed chairman, who at that point had just four years’ experience in back of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has done an outstanding job,\u201d gushed Bush the Elder at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 He’s been a fierce fighter against inflation, but I think he also is as strongly committed to growth,\u201d continued then-President Bush.<\/p>\n

Bush was referring to the \u201cMaestro\u201d\u2026 Alan Greenspan.<\/p>\n

But the president would ultimately eat those words \u2014 without salt.<\/p>\n

The economy was in recession by March 1991.<\/p>\n

And although Greenspan began lowering the fed funds rate from 8% down to 3% by Election Day 1992\u2026 Bush thought Greenspan derelict at his duties:<\/p>\n

I think that if the interest rates had been lowered more dramatically that I would have been re-elected president because the [economic] recovery that we were in would have been more visible.<\/p>\n

And the sting in the \u2026read more<\/a> <\/p>\n
