The recent Syria fireworks have thrown diversionary smoke over Trump’s faltering domestic agenda.<\/p>\n

But the clearing smoke reveals trouble for another key plank of Trump’s agenda \u2014 just like health care reform\u2026<\/p>\n

We refer of course to tax reform.<\/p>\n

On the campaign trail Trump pledged he’d \u201ccut the hell out of taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the Associated Press reports that now Trump’s \u201cgoing back to the drawing board in a search for Republican consensus behind legislation to overhaul the U.S. tax system.\u201d<\/p>\n

White House officials now concede it’s \u201cunlikely\u201d that Trump will get it done by the August deadline Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin established.<\/p>\n

The AP:<\/p>\n

Administration officials say it’s now unlikely that a tax overhaul will meet the August deadline set by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. But the ambitious pace to figure out a plan reflects Trump’s haste to move quickly past a bruising failure to broker a compromise within his own party on how to replace the health insurance law enacted under President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

A divided Republican Party did in health care reform. It could also do in tax reform\u2026<\/p>\n

The Republicans’ Freedom Caucus \u2014 which played the Old Scratch with House Speaker Ryan’s Obamacare replacement bill \u2014 will likely demand entitlement cuts along with tax cuts.<\/p>\n

Trump can cut taxes to Kingdom Come. But without offsetting spending cuts, the deficit goes to the same place.<\/p>\n

And that’s the gripe of the Freedom Caucus.<\/p>\n

But Trump said he’s not touching entitlements.<\/p>\n

So will Trump bypass the Freedom Caucus to score a win on tax reform?<\/p>\n

Our agents tell us that administration officials have been making eyes at House Democrats.<\/p>\n

Woo enough Democrats and Trump might be able to work around the Freedom Caucus.<\/p>\n

And he could finally put a legislative feather in his \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d cap.<\/p>\n

But is it realistic?<\/p>\n

The Tax Policy Center whinges that Trump’s current tax plan delivers half the cuts to the top 1% of households.<\/p>\n

And if Trump looks to the Democrats for tax reform, that means a lot fewer corporate tax cuts and tax cuts for \u201cthe rich.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTax reform’s got to be responsible and it’s got to be progressive,\u201d says Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Maryland), setting the terms.<\/p>\n

Rep. Richard Neal (D-Massachusetts), top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, draws his own line in the sand:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they’re going to talk about some middle-class tax relief, we certainly want to engage. If this is a redo of the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, that’s a nonstarter.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it’s an offer many Republicans might well refuse.<\/p>\n

The Wall Street Journal:<\/p>\n

Democrats are starting to settle on a price for participating in a tax-code overhaul, and many Republicans won’t want to pay it\u2026 Lower tax rates on businesses, investors and top earners are a unifying force in the GOP, and many lawmakers are reluctant to give that up to get a deal with Democrats.<\/p>\n

Another impasse, if true.<\/p>\n

And more cold water on the Trump \u201creflation trade.\u201d<\/p>\n

There may be some common ground on middle-class tax \u2026read more<\/a> <\/p>\n
