{"id":465069,"date":"2017-04-03T10:49:08","date_gmt":"2017-04-03T10:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=465069"},"modified":"2017-04-03T10:49:08","modified_gmt":"2017-04-03T10:49:08","slug":"this-firm-may-make-coals-future-a-lot-brighter-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=465069","title":{"rendered":"This firm may make coal\u2019s future a lot brighter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/juniormininganalyst.com\/this-firm-may-make-coals-future-a-lot-brighter\/\">analyst<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p><span>By  <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/this-firm-may-make-coals-future-a-lot-brighter\/\">Cecilia Jamasmie<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s Dotz Nano (ASX:DTZ), a nanotechnology firm focus on creating quantum dots \u2014 an innovation that can make TVs brighter and counterfeiting harder \u2014 has just found a hot new use for coal.<\/p>\n<p>The company, which changed its name in November from Northern Iron after raising A$6 million (about $4.56 million) from a public offer, said it has found a way to extract nanoparticles able to absorb light and emit specific colors based on their wavelength, from coal.<\/p>\n<p>If successful, the new use for coal could be a welcome boost to the dying industry, particularly in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/these-are-just-15-ways-in-which-graphene-could-reshape-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">graphene<\/a> quantum dots (GQDs) were extracted mostly from graphite, which made the production process very expensive, difficult, and due to the presence of cadmium, even toxic.<\/p>\n<p>Dotz Nano&#8217;s chief executive, Moti Gross, <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/04\/03\/this-company-is-hoping-to-use-coal-to-make-tvs-brighter-and-counterfeiting-harder.html\" target=\"_blank\">told CNBC Monday<\/a> that his company has developed a process that allows extracting quantum dots from coal, which is less expensive and makes it very cost effective for use in a variety of applications, he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The company is not the first to try turning coal into GQDs. Scientists at Rice University, in Houston, Texas, <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/news.rice.edu\/2013\/12\/06\/coal-yields-graphene-quantum-dots\/\" target=\"_blank\">have also been working<\/a> on producing the microscopic discs of atom-thick graphene oxide in bulk from coal. The team&#8217;s first findings were published in 2013 in the journal <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms3943\" target=\"_blank\">Nature Communications<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If successful, the new use for coal could be a welcome boost to the dying industry, particularly in the US, where jobs are extremely unlikely to come back, according to <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/world\/2017\/03\/29\/trumps-promise-to-bring-back-coal-jobs-will-not-be-kept-experts-say.html\" target=\"_blank\">several industry experts<\/a>.
