{"id":464759,"date":"2017-04-03T00:45:25","date_gmt":"2017-04-03T00:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=464759"},"modified":"2017-04-03T00:45:25","modified_gmt":"2017-04-03T00:45:25","slug":"areva-faces-uranium-gate-in-niger-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=464759","title":{"rendered":"Areva faces &#8220;uranium-gate&#8221; in Niger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/juniormininganalyst.com\/areva-faces-uranium-gate-in-niger\/\">analyst<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p><span>By  <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/areva-faces-uranium-gate-niger\/\">Andrew Topf<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>French nuclear power giant Areva is reportedly cooperating with a legal enquiry by activists who say the company cheated Niger out of $3.25 million in uranium exports.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-39456878\" target=\"_blank\">According to the BBC<\/a>, the scandal known as \u201curanium-gate\u201d resulted from a 2011 transaction between Areva, and companies in Niger and abroad:<\/p>\n<p>Their complaint alleges embezzlement of public funds, money laundering, forgery and conspiracy to defraud.<\/p>\n<p>The legal action centres on the allegation that Areva in 2011 bought a stock of uranium from Niger at a discounted price.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2014 <a class=\"colorbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/areva-reaches-uranium-mining-deal-with-niger-delays-project-46579\/\" target=\"_blank\">Areva reached a deal with Niger&#8217;s government<\/a> to continue uranium mining as it pledged to pay more taxes and to indefinitely postpone a large project over profitability concerns.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, opponents to Areva&#8217;s proposed Imouraren mine in Niger, the world&#8217;s fourth-largest uranium producer, claimed the country&#8217;s riches haven&#8217;t been translating into wealth for its citizens.
