\u201cThe American system of government is in jeopardy if we don’t do something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

We hear it all the time \u2014 from the right\u2026 from the left \u2014 and all shades of the spectrum.<\/p>\n

But maybe they’re mistaken. Maybe it’s already too late\u2026<\/p>\n

Old-time journalist Garet Garrett (1878\u20131954) penned a little-known gem, \u201cThe Revolution Was,\u201d in 1938 \u2014 well into the New Deal.<\/p>\n

Many at the time wailed the same lament we hear today:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American system of government is in jeopardy if we don’t do something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it had already changed. Only they didn’t see it.<\/p>\n

Garrett:<\/p>\n

There are those who still think they are holding the pass against a revolution that may be coming up the road. But they are gazing in the wrong direction. The revolution is behind them. It went by in the Night of Depression, singing songs to freedom.<\/p>\n

The revolution was fascism.<\/p>\n

Not the genocidal fascism of Adolf Hitler most people associate with the term\u2026 but the \u201ctrains running on time\u201d economic fascism of Italy’s Benito Mussolini.<\/p>\n

That fascism slipped into American waters under cover of night.<\/p>\n

Once ashore it was bottled, stamped with the smiling face of Uncle Sam and wholesaled nationwide to the tune of \u201cYankee Doodle Dandy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet fascism it was, despite its warmth.<\/p>\n

Former Army Brig. Gen. Hugh \u201cIron Pants\u201d Johnson \u2014 head of the National Recovery Administration (NRA) \u2014 even hung a picture of Il Duce on his wall.<\/p>\n

The American people embraced fascism with both hands\u2026 and didn’t even realize it.<\/p>\n

They were \u201csinging songs to freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

If they had called it fascism, swords would have leapt from their scabbards\u2026 the peasants would have grabbed the pitchforks.<\/p>\n

But repackage it as freedom itself, tart it up in red, white and blue\u2026 and you’ve won yourself a crowd.<\/p>\n

The outward form of American life remained\u2026 but the substance within was changed.<\/p>\n

The most successful revolutions leave the buildings standing as someone once said.<\/p>\n

It’s now 2017 of course. Times are different.<\/p>\n

But the administrative state christened in the New Deal has grown into a morbidly obese old geezer.<\/p>\n

And the nation is now some $20 trillion in hock and still writing checks it promised decades ago.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the surveillance state has been riveted atop the administrative state.<\/p>\n

Not a sparrow falls in these United States \u2014 as it was once known \u2014 that escapes the watchful eye of Uncle Sam.<\/p>\n

(Heard about the NSA lately?)<\/p>\n

Yet just as they moaned during the New Deal, we still howl, \u201cThe American system of government is in jeopardy if we don’t do something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

And something tells us they’ll be saying the same exact thing 50 years hence\u2026<\/p>\n
