The date: Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010\u2026<\/p>\n

The place: Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming, three miles west of Cheyenne. Home of the Air Force’s 90th Missile Wing \u2014 and its 150 nuclear Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles\u2026<\/p>\n

Launch crews stood vigil at their posts that routine Saturday in October. They always do, each and every hour of the 24, 12 months of the calendar\u2026 awaiting the signal. The doomsday signal to unleash their Armageddon fires.<\/p>\n

But that one October Saturday\u2026 something went wrong. Dangerously wrong\u2026<\/p>\n

Suddenly, no warning, 50 Minutemen just vanished from the monitors. Poof! Gone.<\/p>\n

What happened? Was it a glitch?<\/p>\n

No one knew. But this they did know: They were suddenly unable to perform their one and only duty \u2014 to launch the birds upon presidential order.<\/p>\n

They might as well have been dead.<\/p>\n

But wait. An even more disturbing question started gathering circulation\u2026<\/p>\n

Did some doomsday hacker take control of the nukes\u2026 to launch himself?<\/p>\n

Bruce Blair is a former nuclear missile-control launch officer, USAF. His article, \u201cWhy Our Nuclear Weapons Can Be Hacked,\u201d ran in this Tuesday’s New York Times.<\/p>\n

And according to him, on that fearful October Saturday, Warren’s missile men feared someone may have breached the firewalls. <\/p>\n

Blair says hackers are constantly trying to worm our nuclear systems.<\/p>\n

As Blair explains, \u201cThe missiles were designed to fire instantly as soon as they received a short stream of computer code, and they are indifferent about the code’s source.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor all the crews knew,\u201d he continues, raising our hair, \u201csomeone had put all 50 missiles into countdown to launch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweat ran in rivers\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a harrowing scene,\u201d Blair reports, \u201cand apprehension rippled all the way to the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n

For nearly an hour, the monitors remained dark. At any time, the silo lids could fling open\u2026 the rockets ignite\u2026 and the missiles fly.<\/p>\n

And once launched, there was no bringing them back.<\/p>\n

But then, finally, they figured it out\u2026<\/p>\n

A bum circuit card in some computer caused the lockout.<\/p>\n

Crisis averted. This time\u2026<\/p>\n

But the incident prompted a harsh examination. And Blair says it exposed a fatal hole in the system, a hole wide enough for a wiggling hacker.<\/p>\n

The exam revealed that miscreant hackers could indeed breach the missiles’ internet connections and shut down the missiles’ flight guidance systems. That would take the Minutemen out of commission for days or weeks. During which time they’d be sitting ducks.<\/p>\n

But this has Blair posing this nail-biter: \u201cCould a launch be set off by false early warning data that had been corrupted by hackers?\u201d<\/p>\n

(Remember WarGames?)<\/p>\n

After all, as Blair reminds us, \u201cthe president has only three\u2013six minutes to decide how to respond to an apparent nuclear attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gnawing his cuticles, Blair answers his own question:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

That’s just it. We don’t know. Not according to this former missile guy.<\/p>\n

Blair says much of the hardware and software for these systems comes right off the shelf from commercial sources. And it could easily be infected by no-good malware. This lax security \u201cinvites an attempt at an attack with \u2026read more<\/a> <\/p>\n
