{"id":2568,"date":"2013-06-21T18:26:20","date_gmt":"2013-06-21T22:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.juniorminingnews.com\/?p=2568"},"modified":"2013-06-21T18:26:20","modified_gmt":"2013-06-21T22:26:20","slug":"gold-beats-cocaine-for-colombian-rebels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=2568","title":{"rendered":"Gold beats cocaine for Colombian rebels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By\u00a0Andrew Willis<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Bloomberg\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2569\" title=\"colom160\" src=\"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/colom160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"125\" \/>Colombian armed groups are reaping profits from illegal gold mining that are five times greater than returns from cocaine, according to Colonel Hector Paez, acting director of the country\u2019s rural police division.<\/p>\n<p>Cocaine typically takes six months to produce and requires considerable knowledge, while an illegal mining operation in the Colombian jungle can extract two kilograms of gold a week, Paez said in a June 19 interview in Bogota.\u00a0\u201cIllegal mining has risen in this country &#8212; for gold, coltan, limestone and construction materials,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are earning more money from gold than cocaine or kidnappings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gold, which slumped below $1,300 an ounce for the first time since September 2010 in New York yesterday, has become Colombia\u2019s biggest export after oil and coal.
