The details of a planned overhaul of Mexico’s mining legislation — including the possible introduction of a royalty payment — are expected to be finalized by June, according to Jes\u00fas Zambrano Grijalva, president of the board of the Pacto por M\u00e9xico (pact for Mexico) proposals.<\/p>\n

The changes, which could include “deep reform” of existing mining law or a new mining bill, are among a number of proposals set to be discussed between April and June, Zambrano, who is also president of the PRD party, said in a press conference.<\/p>\n

Reform of the country’s mining law is pledge number 61 in President Enrique Pe\u00f1a Nieto’s Pacto por M\u00e9xico proposals outlined in December.<\/p>\n

The pledge includes a shakeup of the system of concessions and payments within the industry to directly benefit communities in mining areas and ensure the sector respects the traditions and social cohesion of those communities.<\/p>\n
