{"id":1597,"date":"2013-03-18T08:24:15","date_gmt":"2013-03-18T12:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1597"},"modified":"2013-03-18T08:24:15","modified_gmt":"2013-03-18T12:24:15","slug":"cyprus-events-push-gold-price-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1597","title":{"rendered":"Cyprus events push gold price up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Marc Jones<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Reuters<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1598\" title=\"bank160\" src=\"http:\/\/www.juniorminingnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/bank160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"163\" \/>The surprise decision by euro zone leaders to part-fund a bailout of Cyprus by taxing bank deposits sent shockwaves through financial markets on Monday, with shares and the bonds of struggling euro zone governments tumbling.<\/p>\n<p>The bloc struck a deal on Saturday to hand Cyprus rescue loans worth 10 billion euros ($13 billion), but defied warnings &#8212; including from the European Central Bank &#8212; and imposed a levy that would see those with cash in the island&#8217;s banks lose between 6.75 and 9.9 percent of their money.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament in Cyprus put off a vote on the measure &#8212; which has shaken depositors&#8217; confidence in banks across the continent &#8212; until Tuesday, however, and with public anger at the deal widespread the government said it was already looking to ease the pain for small savers.<\/p>\n<p>Without the rescue, Cyprus would have be unable to avoid a default.
