{"id":1206552,"date":"2020-09-10T07:03:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-10T12:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1035167"},"modified":"2020-09-10T07:03:00","modified_gmt":"2020-09-10T12:03:00","slug":"bhp-emissions-reduction-targets-by-2030-fail-to-impress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1206552","title":{"rendered":"BHP emissions reduction targets by 2030 fail to impress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BHP (ASX, LON, NYSE: BHP) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhp.com\/media-and-insights\/news-releases\/2020\/09\/bhp-climate-change-briefing\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unveiled on Thursday details<\/a> of a revamped strategy to cut operational emissions by 30% by 2030 from this year\u2019s levels, but it stopped short of tackling Scope 3 emissions \u2014 those generated\u00a0indirectly\u00a0when consumers burn or process its oil, coal or iron ore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s largest miner, which is also <a href=\"https:\/\/climateaccountability.org\/carbonmajors.html\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of the biggest carbon emitters<\/a>, will focus on using cleaner forms of power supply as well as taking steps to electrify its diesel-powered truck fleet. The moves aim to eventually reach net zero operational emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>While BHP\u2019s target is less than perfect, it doubles Rio Tinto\u2019s (ASX, LON: RIO) goals of reducing operational (Scope 1 &amp; 2) emissions to 15% below 2018 levels by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are &#8230; realistic about the magnitude of the task that the world faces in meeting the Paris goals,\u201d chief executive Mike Henry <a href=\"https:\/\/edge.media-server.com\/mmc\/p\/te5decth\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in a webcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, today the world is not currently on track &#8230; The world will need to increase action if it is to achieve the ambitions of Paris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BHP had already pledged to achieve net <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/bhp-earmarks-400-million-to-reduce-emissions-from-its-mines-products\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zero operational \u2014 scope 1 and 2 \u2014 emissions by 2050<\/a>. It had also said it would bring those emissions below fiscal 2017 levels by the 2022 financial year.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/most-top-miners-failing-paris-agreement-goals\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study published in May<\/a> showed that eight of the world\u2019s top ten largest mining companies were not doing enough to help\u00a0keep global temperatures from increasing by less than\u00a02\u00b0C a year by 2050.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hardest to tackle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Scope 3 emissions are undoubtedly the hardest to tackle, but since they account for as much as&nbsp;97% of BHP\u2019s total, and are larger than Australia\u2019s total emissions in 2019 of 532.5 million, stakeholders were expecting more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe targets fall short of the ~42% reduction that would be required to align with a 1.5\u00b0C pathway from 2020 to 2030,\u201d investors group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/bhps-new-emission-targets-fail-to-meet-1-5c-ambition\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Market Forces said<\/a>. \u201cPut simply, BHP has deliberately chosen not to meet the Paris Agreement\u2019s ultimate aim of holding warming to 1.5\u00b0C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BHP is the top exporter of coking coal used in steelmaking and number three in iron ore, the raw material for steel.<\/p>\n<p>The highly polluting process of making steel involves adding coking coal to iron ore to make the alloy, and is responsible for up to 9% of global greenhouse emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;Melbourne, Australia-based giant recently announced plans to divest some coal assets, including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/bhp-to-sell-australian-thermal-coal-mine\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mount Arthur thermal coal mine in Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It has also said it would link executive bonuses to concrete steps taken to help the company become carbon-neutral by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><em>With files from Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The miner has not set goals to cut its Scope 3 emissions &mdash;
