{"id":1206035,"date":"2020-09-08T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-08T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1034855"},"modified":"2020-09-08T08:30:00","modified_gmt":"2020-09-08T13:30:00","slug":"mining-green-metals-may-increase-pressure-on-key-biodiversity-areas-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1206035","title":{"rendered":"Mining \u2018green metals\u2019 may increase pressure on key biodiversity areas \u2013 study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A study led by researchers at the University of Queensland found that protected areas, key biodiversity areas and the world\u2019s remaining wilderness would be under growing pressure from mining the minerals and metals required for a clean energy transition.<\/p>\n<p>According to Laura Sonter, lead author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-17928-5#MOESM1\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper<\/a> published in <em>Nature Communications<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/renewables-use-spike-in-2020-not-enough-to-meet-climate-change-goals\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewable energy production<\/a> is material-intensive &#8211; much more so than fossil fuels &#8211; and mining these materials would increase as fossil fuels were phased out, creating further pressure on the biodiversity located in mineral-rich landscapes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Of the mining areas that overlap protected areas and wilderness, those that target materials for renewable energy contain a greater density of mines<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>To reach this conclusion, Sonter and her team mapped the world\u2019s mining areas according to an extensive database of 62,381 pre-operational, operational and closed mining properties, targeting 40 different commodities.<\/p>\n<p>They found that areas with potential mining activity covered 50 million square kilometres of the planet &#8211; 35% of the Earth\u2019s terrestrial land surface excluding Antarctica &#8211; and many of these areas coincided with places critical for biodiversity conservation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost 10% of all mining areas occur within currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/venezuela-allows-gold-mining-in-river-basins\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protected sites<\/a>, with plenty of other mining occurring within or nearby sites deemed a priority for the future conservation of many species,\u201d Sonter said in a media statement.<\/p>\n<p>Of the total areas analyzed, 82% target materials needed for renewable energy production, of which, 12% coincide with protected areas, 7% with key biodiversity areas and 14% with wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd, of the mining areas that overlapped protected areas and wilderness, those that targeted materials for renewable energy contained a greater density of mines than the mining areas that targeted other materials,\u201d Sonter said.<\/p>\n<p>In her view and that of her colleagues, this topic needs to be addressed in international fora such as the global discussions about the post-2020 United Nations&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/sdg.iisd.org\/commentary\/policy-briefs\/on-the-road-to-the-2020-un-biodiversity-conference-imagining-the-post-2020-global-biodiversity-framework\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strategic Plan for Biodiversity<\/a>.
