{"id":1203955,"date":"2020-08-26T13:46:33","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T18:46:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1033845"},"modified":"2020-08-26T13:46:33","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T18:46:33","slug":"mining-market-capitalization-up-32-in-q2-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1203955","title":{"rendered":"Mining market capitalization up 32% in Q2 \u2013 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The mining industry&#8217;s market capitalization rose 32% to $1.393 trillion in Q2 2020 compared to previous quarter, driven mainly by the positive gold price performance in the quarter and by a rebound in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/metal-markets-caught-out-by-strength-of-chinese-stimulus\/\" >Chinese demand<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.marketintelligence.spglobal.com\/rs\/565-BDO-100\/images\/state-of-the-market-mining-q2-2020-infographic-or-sandp-global-market-intelligence.pdf\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new report by S&amp;P Global<\/a> market intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-one of the 25 largest mining companies posted gains in June, boosted by high metal prices, S&amp;P reports. <\/p>\n<p>The Exploration Price Index (EPI) was at 135.9, its highest level since March 2013, driven mainly by its significant weighting to gold and the positive gold price performance in the quarter, S&amp;P reports. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-26-at-11.42.26-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1033897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-26-at-11.42.26-AM.png 612w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-26-at-11.42.26-AM-300x187.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><figcaption>Source: S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Copper, nickel, zinc, iron ore, gold, silver and platinum all rose by double digit percentages by end-June. Copper <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/copper-surges-above-3-for-the-first-time-since-june-2018\/\" >rose above $3 a pound for the first time in more than two years<\/a> last week and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/iron-ore-price-rockets-to-highest-since-january-2014\/\" >iron ore prices hit six-and-half year highs<\/a> as Chinese furnaces, where more than half the world\u2019s steel is forged, roll out crude steel at an unprecedented pace.<\/p>\n<p>According to S&amp;P, there was also an uptick in M&amp;A activity in Q2, with 38 deals at a value of $4.12 billion. Gold made up 75% of the total, at $3.13 billion. SSR Mining&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/ssr-alacer-merger-gets-final-approval\/\" >acquisition of Alacer Gold<\/a> accounted for about $1.9 billion and Zijin Mining&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/chinas-zijin-takes-control-of-tibet-copper-miner-for-548m\/\" >acquisition of Tibet Julong Copper<\/a>, at $453 million, accounted for 41% of the overall deal value for copper.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Copper, nickel, zinc, iron ore, gold, silver and platinum all rose by double-digit percentages by end-June<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Based on an analysis of capex expenditure guidance for the top 150 mining companies, 52 recorded an aggregate $7.5 billion cut in planned spending in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Financings fell by over $5 billion to $7.2 billion in Q2, compared to the previous quarter. Canada was the top destination with $1.05 billion. <\/p>\n<p>Financing raised by majors more than halved compared with Q1. However, financing for juniors more than doubled, indicating strong markets for gold explorers and developers.<\/p>\n<p>Drilling activity in Q2 fell in terms of the number of projects drilled and<br \/>the number of drillholes, by 21% and 17% respectively, compared to Q1.<\/p>\n<h2>Outlook<\/h2>\n<p>Global mining has escaped the worst of covid-19 in terms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/covid-19-disrupts-8-8-billion-of-global-mining-output\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">production disruptions<\/a> because major producing nations across Latin America and countries like Canada and South Africa declared mining essential industries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>S&amp;P&#8217;s tracking of mine closures throughout the pandemic identified 275 mine sites in 36 countries that were impacted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many commodities only suffered total suspensions that we calculated to be less than 5% of annualized output.
