(<em>Image courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gemdiamonds.com\/news-article.php?articleID=9251\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gem Diamonds.<\/a><\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The diamond, the company said, is&nbsp;one of the largest gem quality rocks that have been recovered this year.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Clifford Elphick said a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the diamond will be used to fund a special community project approved by the Lesotho government.<\/p>\n<p>Since acquiring Let\u0161eng in 2006, Gem Diamonds has found more than 60 white gem quality diamonds over 100 carats each, which makes the mine the world\u2019s highest dollar per carat kimberlite diamond operation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The type II withe diamond is one of the largest gem quality rocks recovered this year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The last stone over 100 carats Gem Diamonds unearthed at the mine was&nbsp;a 183-carat white, Type IIa rock, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/gem-diamonds-finds-183-carat-rough-at-its-letseng-mine-in-lesotho\/\" >in February<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At an average elevation of 3,100 metres (10,000 feet) above sea level, Let\u0161eng is also one of the world\u2019s highest diamond mines.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest rough ever found was the 3,106-carat Cullinan, dug near Pretoria, South Africa, in 1905. It was later&nbsp;cut into several stones, including the First Star of Africa and the Second Star of Africa, which are part of Britain\u2019s Crown Jewels held in the Tower of London.<\/p>\n<p>Lucara Diamond\u2019s (TSX:LUC)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/louis-vuitton-is-turning-the-worlds-second-biggest-diamond-into-jewellery\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,758-carat&nbsp;Sewel\u00f4<\/a>, found in 2019,&nbsp;holds the second-biggest diamond in record tittle, while the same company\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/despite-the-hype-worlds-second-largest-diamond-ever-found-fails-to-sell\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona<\/a>&nbsp;and the 995-carat Excelsior are considered the third- and fourth-largest diamonds ever found.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Gem Diamonds announced that the Lesotho government had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/gem-diamonds-mining-lease-for-letseng-renewed-for-10-years\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewed the Let\u0161eng mining lease for another 10 years<\/a>, and granted it exclusive rights for further renewals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\"
