{"id":1202025,"date":"2020-08-17T16:09:34","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T21:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1032792"},"modified":"2020-08-18T16:09:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-18T21:09:00","slug":"jetti-resources-quest-for-copper-minings-holy-grail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1202025","title":{"rendered":"Jetti Resources\u2019 quest for copper mining\u2019s holy grail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The mining industry knows all about the big copper conundrum.<\/p>\n<p>The highly conductive red metal is actually the vital metal of the future that needs to be mined for the green energy era to come to fruition, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/solgolds-copper-project-in-ecuador-bigger-than-expected\/\" >but big, new deposits are rare.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New copper projects such as Cascabel in Ecuador and Pebble in Alaska and the Oyu Tolgoi expansion in Mongolia are often faced with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/solgolds-stock-sinks-ecuador-court-hears-submissions-mining-referendum-cascabel\/\" >community opposition,<\/a> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/northern-dynasty-gets-us-nod-for-alaska-mine-plan\/\" >permitting delays<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/rio-tinto-faces-1-9bn-cost-blowout-further-delays-at-oyu-tolgoi-copper-gold-mine\/6263\/\" >cost overruns<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Facing aging mines with lower grades, the industry is looking at how much more copper they can produce out of their existing operations \u2013 Chile\u2019s Codelco, for example,  is planning <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/codelco-raises-800-million-to-face-crisis\/\" >massive upgrades of its aging mines.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Some mines halted or curtailed operations amid the coronavirus pandemic, and global economic growth <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/pandemic-to-worsen-copper-glut-during-next-18-months\/\" >projections were tossed aside<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2>New leaching technology<\/h2>\n<p>Jetti Resources is a start-up founded in 2014 that has introduced to the industry its eponymous technology, which it says makes it possible to extract copper from low-grade primary sulfides like chalcopyrite, the world\u2019s most abundant copper mineral ore.<\/p>\n<p>Headquartered in Colorado, with offices in Santiago and Vancouver, Jetti is a recipient of the Canadian Government\u2019s Natural Resources Clean Growth Program funding to further research and encourage projects utilizing its \u201cmore energy-efficient process to extract copper from regular- and lower-grade ores, as well as waste mining materials and tailings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Its founder and CEO is 31-year-old venture capitalist Mike Outwin, who, in 2018, while based in Vancouver, was named one of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbusiness.ca\/30-Under-30-2018-Mike-Outwin\" >BC Business magazine&#8217;s &#8217;30 under 30&#8242;<\/a> business leaders. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIts always been thought \u2013 if you can leach chalcopyrite \u2013 that&#8217;s the holy grail\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Mike Outwin, CEO, Jetti Resources<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFor decades they&#8217;ve been trying to figure out how to utilize existing technologies and infrastructure to get copper out of that material,&#8221; Outwin told MINING.COM. \u201cIts always been thought &#8211; if you can leach chalcopyrite \u2013 that&#8217;s the holy grail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its quest for the holy grail of copper mining, Jetti Resources has attracted copper industry veterans Ken Pickering, former BHP Copper president, former BHP CEO Chip Goodyear, Trevor Reid, former Xstrata CFO, Jonathan Leslie, former CEO of Rio Tinto Copper and John Mackenzie, former CEO of Anglo American Copper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe major mining companies have long recognized that finding a way to increase copper recoveries when leaching low grade sulphide ores would generate a step change in industry economics,\u201d Mackenzie said in an emailed statement. \u201cJetti has developed a technology that solves this conundrum in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Outwin, Jetti\u2019s catalytic leaching technology addresses the key technical problem preventing recovery of potentially trillions of dollars of trapped resources.<\/p>\n<h2>Pinto Valley <\/h2>\n<p>Jetti technology was tested this year by Capstone Mining at its Pinto Valley mine in Arizona. During the first year of Capstone\u2019s partnership with Jetti, cathode production per area irrigated has doubled, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/capstonemining.com\/news\/news-details\/2020\/Capstone-to-Expand-Leaching-at-Pinto-Valley-300-to-350-MIbs-of-Low-Cost-Copper-Cathode-Production-Potential\/default.aspx\" >Capstone announced in July.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pinto Valley mine has successfully demonstrated positive economics from enhanced dump leach performance by partnering with Jetti Resources to apply their novel patented catalytic technology at Pinto Valley\u2019s existing dump leach operation,&#8221; Capstone said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Jetti-%E2%80%93-How-it-works-1024x568.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1032793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Jetti-\u2013-How-it-works-1024x568.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Jetti-\u2013-How-it-works-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Jetti-\u2013-How-it-works-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Jetti-\u2013-How-it-works.jpg 1492w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Source: Jetti Resources<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe technology that we&#8217;ve developed solves the problem [of] being able to leach chalcopyrite to get the copper out, that the industry currently assigned zero percent recovery to. Seventy percent of the world&#8217;s remaining copper resources are stuck in low-grade chalcopyrite,\u201d Outwin said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As your ore grade goes down, you have dwindling accessibility to that process route. The ore has to have enough copper in it to justify traditional processing. We see huge opportunity because all of that low grade ore appearing in these mines that makes up large portions of the resource base is inaccessible to them, but with our technology it is accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outwin said the Jetti technology is a \u201cgame changer\u201d because miners generally assign zero percent recovery to the low grade chalcopyrite, which can make up a significant portion of their mines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;ve developed is a low cost catalyst that enhances the leaching &#8211; it\u2019s the key that unlocks that layer and lets the copper out. We&#8217;re able to use existing technology and existing leaching infrastructure that [is in] place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For mines that have large unused chalcopyrite stockpiles, Outwin said Jetti\u2019s technology enables the extraction of copper without having to interact with untouched deposits.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are sites out there&#8230;with capacity of 100,000 &#8211; 200,000 tonnes that are operating at 50% capacity right now.
