{"id":1198693,"date":"2020-07-29T12:47:29","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T17:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1031160"},"modified":"2020-07-29T12:47:29","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T17:47:29","slug":"vale-enacts-emergency-protocol-at-barragem-5-dam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1198693","title":{"rendered":"Vale enacts emergency protocol at Barragem 5 dam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vale (NYSE: Vale) <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vale.com\/brasil\/EN\/investors\/information-market\/press-releases\/Pages\/Vale-informa-sobre-a-Barragem-5-.aspx\" >announced<\/a> on Wednesday that it started, on a preventive basis, the Level 1 emergency protocol for Barragem 5 dam, at Mina da Mutuca, Nova Lima, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company, the protocol does not require the evacuation of the population downstream of the dam. <\/p>\n<p>Barragem 5 was built with compacted soil, with a downstream construction method and no longer receives mining tailings.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Last October, 54 Brazilian dams failed to certify their stability or file the stability paperwork altogether<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;This protocol is a consequence of the change in technical criteria, with a new interpretation of the resistance parameters carried out by an additional stage of evaluation of Vale&#8217;s structures in Brazil. From the most recent inspections, anomalies that could compromise the safety of the structure have not been identified,&#8221; Vale said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Vale reported that the activation of Level 1 of the dam does not impact the company&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/vale-says-q2-output-rises-5-5-despite-pandemic\/\" >2020 production plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The safety of Vale\u2019s facilities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/brazils-deadly-dam-collapse-pushes-miners-set-global-rules-tailings\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has been under scrutiny <\/a>after the Brumadinho dam collapsed last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/brazil-to-file-charges-against-vale-for-dam-disaster\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">releasing a torrent of mining waste<\/a> that killed about 270 people.
