{"id":1198417,"date":"2020-07-28T11:26:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T16:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1031057"},"modified":"2020-07-28T11:26:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T16:26:00","slug":"us-mint-sets-limits-on-gold-silver-coins-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1198417","title":{"rendered":"US Mint sets limits on gold, silver coins sales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US Mint has reduced the supply of gold and silver coins to third-party distributors as the relentless coronavirus pandemic slows down production even of regular change.<\/p>\n<p>The Mint&#8217;s New York-based facility is evaluating risks to employees to curb the spread of the virus, thereby slowing production for the next 12 to 18 months, <em>Bloomberg<\/em> reported on Tuesday, citing internal documents.<\/p>\n<p>The nation\u2019s coin maker, which is in charge of producing new money to replenish supply, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/news\/press-releases\/statement-on-circulating-coins\" >warned last week<\/a> that covid-19 had resulted in fewer pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters in circulation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Mint\u2019s West Point in New York is taking measures to prevent the virus from spreading among its employees, slowing coin production for the next 12 to 18 months.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Typically, coins get circulated daily. But as retailers shut down to prevent the spread of the virus, coins in circulation disappeared and orders for newly-minted coins increased.<\/p>\n<p>The Mint is on track to produce 1.65 billion coins per month for the rest of the year. By comparison, the government produced an average of 1 billion coins per month in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>While the Treasury Department\u2019s agency is working on addressing the issue, it has asked shoppers to help out too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask that the American public start spending their coins, depositing them, or exchanging them for currency at financial institutions or taking them to a coin redemption kiosk,\u201d the Mint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/news\/press-releases\/statement-on-circulating-coins\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in the release<\/a>. \u201cThe coin supply problem can be solved with each of us doing our part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell&nbsp;spoke about the coin shortage&nbsp;during a virtual hearing with the House Financial Services Committee in June. <\/p>\n<p>Powell explained that since more people have been staying home, shopping online and avoiding physical currency because of the pandemic, the normal flow of coins through the economy has been severely interrupted.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Limit supply for up to 18 months<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The US Mint has been producing commemorative and investment coins, made of gold, silver, platinum and palladium, at a lower capacity <a href=\"https:\/\/uscoinnews.com\/2020\/04\/21\/us-mint-reopening-west-point-facility-today\/\">since late April<\/a>, when the West Point facility reopened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that this environment is going to continue to lead to some degree of reduced capacity as West Point struggles to balance employee safety against market demand,\u201d the Mint said in a document seen by <em>Bloomberg<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The agency noted that, as it implements measures to prevent covid-19 from spreading among its employees, production of every kind of coin will be affected for the next 12 to 18 months<\/p>\n<p>Created by Congress in 1792, the US Mint became part of the Department of the Treasury in 1873.
