{"id":1198358,"date":"2020-07-28T08:40:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T13:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1030746"},"modified":"2020-07-28T08:40:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T13:40:00","slug":"canadian-miners-csr-programs-not-prompting-real-change-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1198358","title":{"rendered":"Canadian miners\u2019 CSR programs not prompting real change \u2013 study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mining companies\u2019 corporate social responsibility programs could yield better outcomes if they tackled \u201creal change on the ground,\u201d new research has found.<\/p>\n<p>According to Simon Fraser University\u2019s political economist Anil Hira, miners and companies in other sectors such as forestry and the textile industry should tie themselves to real changes that have broader and lasting impacts in the communities they reach out to.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/23340460.2020.1789430?journalCode=rgaf20&amp;\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper<\/a> published in the journal <em>Global Affairs<\/em>, Hira explains that this approach is a departure from the current, widespread idea of capital-intensive one-off projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>EITI data revealed that the mining the industry shows no real improvement for local communities or diminution of conflicts<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>By analyzing data on how Canadian companies fare in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), the researcher found that the industry shows no real improvement for local communities or diminution of conflicts, despite a plethora of global CSR efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anyone buys a gold ring to get married, they can\u2019t guarantee that gold hasn\u2019t been produced by conflict or child labour in Sub-Saharan Africa,\u201d Hira said in a media statement. \u201cThey can&#8217;t guarantee that people involved in that gold mining are getting a fair wage, or that their communities are benefiting from the mining project or that the environmental effects won\u2019t last for generations once the mining project ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his view, these flaws make it difficult for consumers to make ethical product choices.<\/p>\n<p>For the economist, one way to address these issues is by eliminating competing standards, something that companies can do by working with international organizations, NGOs and governments on a harmonized label for consumers.
