{"id":1196724,"date":"2020-07-20T11:13:07","date_gmt":"2020-07-20T16:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1030189"},"modified":"2020-07-20T11:13:07","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T16:13:07","slug":"jiangxi-copper-sells-shares-in-first-quantum-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1196724","title":{"rendered":"Jiangxi Copper sells shares in First Quantum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jiangxi Copper sold 1.2 million shares in&nbsp;First Quantum Minerals&nbsp;(TSX: FM; LSE: FQM) last week according to SEDI filings, BMO reports.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese company bought its equity stake in the miner in December 2019.<\/p>\n<p>BMO analyst Jackie Przybylowski said the move did not come as a surprise.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>First Quantum reported consolidated copper production of 195,285 tonnes in Q1, a 43% year-on-year increase<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen the relationship between First Quantum and Jiangxi strained since late last year,\u201d the analyst said in a research note to clients. \u201cOn the Q1\/2020 earnings call Tristan Pascall, Group Director Strategy, referred to Jiangxi as a \u201cdonkey\u201d in context of negotiations between the two groups, which suggested to us that the relationship had not improved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mining analyst noted that First Quantum\u2019s partnership with Jiangxi \u201cwas initially intended to fund an expansion at Kansanshi while continuing to allocate operating cash flows towards debt repayment. However, the actual necessity of a smelter expansion and the timing of when this would be required is unclear. Management had promised to put out a technical report on the smelter expansion in March, but that has been delayed until tentatively sometime later this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Przybylowski said one consequence of Jiangxi\u2019s move is a \u201clower probability that First Quantum is taken out\u201d and \u201cwith Jiangxi no longer involved, the \u2018takeout premium\u2019 that can sometimes boost the First Quantum share price should be lowered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, she is maintaining her \u2018outperform\u2019 rating on the company and her one-year price target of C$12.50 per share. (At presstime in Toronto First Quantum\u2019s shares were trading at C$13.18 within a 52-week range of C$4.72 and C$14.12.)<\/p>\n<p>In a worst-case scenario in which First Quantum is unable to finance an expansion of its smelter, she said, production growth from Cobre Panama \u201cwould serve to offset the declines in Zambia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cobre Panama, which began production in 2019, is one of the largest new copper mines globally.
