{"id":1195712,"date":"2020-07-14T11:46:59","date_gmt":"2020-07-14T16:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1029649"},"modified":"2020-07-14T11:46:59","modified_gmt":"2020-07-14T16:46:59","slug":"copper-price-near-2-year-high-after-chinese-imports-rocket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1195712","title":{"rendered":"Copper price near 2-year high after Chinese imports rocket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Copper futures prices remained within shouting distance of the $3 a pound level on Tuesday on the back of a surge in Chinese imports of the metal and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/labor-tensions-add-to-coppers-steady-drumbeat-of-supply-threats\/\">worries about supply<\/a> from South America.<\/p>\n<p>Copper trading in New York changed hands for $2.9460 a pound ($6,495 a tonne) in early afternoon trade, easing back from yesterday&#8217;s close at a two year high. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right\">\n<p><strong>Another indication of demand outstripping supply is treatment and refining charges falling to an eight-year low.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In March, the bellwether metal briefly traded below $2.00, levels last seen during the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, but has now recovered by nearly 50%.<\/p>\n<p>Customs data released overnight showed China\u2019s unwrought copper imports (anodes and cathodes) in June rose a stunning 50% from the previous month to 656,483 tonnes \u2013 a full 15% above the previous monthly record. <\/p>\n<p>June cargoes were double that of the same month last year as the infrastructure and manufacturing sectors in China, responsible for more than half the world&#8217;s copper consumption, rapidly recover following the covid-19 slump. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/COPPER-PRICE-at-2-year-high-china-imporst-surge-50.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1029666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/COPPER-PRICE-at-2-year-high-china-imporst-surge-50.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/COPPER-PRICE-at-2-year-high-china-imporst-surge-50-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Over the first half of 2020, imports totalled 2.84m tonnes \u2013 up 25% year-on-year and on track to easily beat 2018&#8217;s annual record of 5.3m tonnes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>June imports of copper concentrate fell unexpectedly, down 6% to 1.69m tonnes from May, but still up 8.4% from June last year.<\/p>\n<p>BMO Capital Markets in a note said that the fall in concentrate imports were not due to a lack of demand but a shortage of mine supply \u2013 world no 2 producer Peru suffered a 40% fall in output in May.<\/p>\n<p>Another indication of demand outstripping supply is the decline in treatment and refining charges.
