{"id":1194054,"date":"2020-07-06T11:47:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-06T16:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1028839"},"modified":"2020-07-06T11:47:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-06T16:47:00","slug":"ivanhoe-keeps-kakula-copper-project-in-drc-ahead-of-schedule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1194054","title":{"rendered":"Ivanhoe keeps Kakula copper project in DRC ahead of schedule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada\u2019s Ivanhoe Mines (TSX:IVN) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ivanhoemines.com\/news\/2020\/kakula-copper-mine-underground-development-continues-significantly-ahead-of-schedule-more-than-17-kilometres-now-complete-and\/\">said on Monday<\/a> that progress at its Kakula copper project, the first of multiple planned&nbsp;mining&nbsp;areas at Kamoa-Kakula in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)&nbsp;continues to progress ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<p>The company, together with its joint venture (JV) partner China&#8217;s Zijin Mining Group, has now completed more than 17 km of underground development, of which 5.1 km is ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Ivanhoe also said that Kakula\u2019s 2,000-tonne-per-hour ore conveyor system began operations in June, which will further increase the mine\u2019s pace of underground development.<\/p>\n<p>As work on extending the mine below the surface progresses over the next few months, the majority of the headings are expected to transition into the high-grade ore zones, Ivanhoe said.<\/p>\n<p>The Vancouver-based miner noted that early implementation of&nbsp;covid-19 prevention measures&nbsp;has allowed the development of Kakula to continue uninterrupted. As a result, initial production expected in the third quarter of 2021.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cost increase<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In November, the Kamoa-Kakula team completed basic design and costing for Kakula\u2019s initial mine and infrastructure, the first concentrator module and associated infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The report\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/cost-of-ivanhoes-giant-copper-project-in-congo-hits-1-3-billion\/\" >pushed initial capital costs up to about $1.3 billion<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 an 18% increase over planned costs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Robert Friedland believes the project will become\u00a0the world\u2019s second-largest copper mine.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Billionaire Robert Friedland, who made his fortune from the Voisey\u2019s Bay nickel project in Canada in the 1990s,&nbsp;has been working on Kamoa-Kakula for ten years.<\/p>\n<p>The mining legend believes the project, being developed in partnership with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/zijin-mining-buys-10-canadas-ivanhoe-mines\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China\u2019s Zijin Mining Group<\/a>, will become&nbsp;the world\u2019s second-largest copper mine.<\/p>\n<p>According to an&nbsp;independent pre-feasibility study (PFS)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/friedland-confident-congo-copper-mine-will-worlds-second-largest\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released last year<\/a>, if all phases are completed the operation is expected to reach peak annual production of more than 700,000 tonnes of copper.<\/p>\n<p>The updated resource estimate for the massive project,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/ivanhoes-giant-kamoa-kakula-copper-project-in-drc-keeps-getting-bigger\/\" >delivered in February,<\/a>&nbsp;shows it holds 1.4 billion indicated tonnes grading 2.74% copper for 83.7 billion pounds of copper and another 339 million inferred tonnes grading 1.68% copper for 12.5 billion pounds of copper at a 1% cut-off grade.<\/p>\n<p>Ivanhoe\u2019s stock was up 3.6% on the TSX on Monday afternoon.
