{"id":1192640,"date":"2020-06-28T18:01:52","date_gmt":"2020-06-28T23:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1028145"},"modified":"2020-06-28T18:01:52","modified_gmt":"2020-06-28T23:01:52","slug":"renewables-sector-falling-short-on-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1192640","title":{"rendered":"Renewables sector falling short on human rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ongoing and global transition to renewable energies is not exempt of human rights abuses, which could create risks in a sector&nbsp;vital to&nbsp;countering&nbsp;the climate crisis, the first benchmark of companies in the sector, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/sectors\/energy\/renewable-energy\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published Monday<\/a>, shows.<\/p>\n<p>According to UK-based Business &amp; Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC), the authors of the benchmark, the renewable energy industry has seen a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/demand-for-battery-metals-renewables-fuelling-human-rights-abuse-report\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rise&nbsp;in claims of&nbsp;human rights violations<\/a>. At least 197&nbsp;allegations against green energy companies have been filed since 2010, with 40 of them registered last year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Renewables play a key role in reducing C02 emissions, but can come at a cost if companies violate human rights in their operations and supply chains<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Those allegations, the watchdog says, include killings, threats and land grabs. They prove that efforts to&nbsp;protect&nbsp;workers and communities are falling short, it notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRenewable energy&nbsp;will&nbsp; play a pivotal role in \u2018building back better\u2019 following the covid-19 pandemic,&#8221; says BHRRC deputy director Marti&nbsp;Flacks.&nbsp;\u201cThis makes it&nbsp;even more&nbsp;crucial that the renewable energy sector avoid the mistakes of&nbsp;other&nbsp;energy providers&nbsp;and urgently&nbsp;build&nbsp;respect for&nbsp;human rights&nbsp;in&nbsp;their operations&nbsp;and supply chains.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company analyzed 16&nbsp;of the largest publicly-traded&nbsp;wind and solar producers using&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Benchmark%20Methodology%20Designed%20FINAL_0.pdf\" >a&nbsp;methodology<\/a> developed through seven global consultations, involving more than 100 stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>The lower the score, the more work companies have to do to ensure respect for human rights in their operations and through their supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Firms analyzed include Enel, Blackrock, NextEra, Jinko&nbsp;Solar, China General Nuclear Power Corp, and&nbsp;PowerChina, among others.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The study concluded&nbsp;that nearly half (7\/16) of the firms scored below 10%, with three quarters (12\/16) scoring below 40%. No entities scored above 53%.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the most important indicators, the sector\u2019s average score was on par with other high-risk industries,&nbsp;such as apparel, agricultural products, mining and ICT manufacturing, the NGO said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The study concluded&nbsp;that nearly half (7\/16) of the firms scored below 10%, with three quarters (12\/16) scoring below 40%. No entities scored above 53%<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t include original documents nor full transcriptions of court cases against companies. Instead, it just links to either media reports on an alleged abuse or to research by other NGOs working in the field,<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/amnesty-accuses-electric-vehicles-makers-using-unethically-sourced-minerals\/\" >&nbsp;such as Amnesty International<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Land use<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the most pressing issues, BHRRC says, is related to land-use as some projects have threatened environmentally sensitive areas land utilized by indigenous&nbsp;people. Examples&nbsp;include a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/norway-to-build-wind-farm-despite-un-calls-to-suspend-project-over-concerns-of-impact-on-indigenous-herders%E2%80%99-livelihoods-0\" >wind farm in Norway<\/a> challenged by reindeer-herders over loss of land; a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/mexico-judge-rules-against-jinkosolar-solar-farm-due-to-lack-of-consultation-and-information-regarding-impacts\" >solar park in Mexico<\/a>&nbsp;sued over lack of community consent, and a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/kenya-kinangop-wind-park-impacts-communities-in-nyandarua\" >wind farm in Kenya<\/a>&nbsp;cancelled after lawsuits by farmers&nbsp;and local landowners.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Good practice in the sector does exist, such as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/mexico-ixtepec-wind-project-impacts-communities-in-oaxaca\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wind farm in Mexico<\/a>&nbsp;owned by the indigenous community, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/so-africa-jeffreys-bay-wind-farm-impacts-communities-in-jeffreys-bay\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wind farm project in South Africa<\/a>&nbsp;that&nbsp;consulted with local communities about jobs and part-ownership of the project, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indigenouscleanenergy.com\/ice-projects\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wind and solar projects in Canada<\/a>&nbsp;owned by indigenous groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BHRRC\u2019s benchmark outlines policy and practice&nbsp;gaps the sector&nbsp;should address to ensure the transition to a&nbsp;net&nbsp;zero-carbon&nbsp;economy is both&nbsp;fast and&nbsp;fair.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Renewable Energy and Human Rights Benchmark&nbsp;uses&nbsp;13 core indicators&nbsp;from&nbsp;the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark&nbsp;to assess companies against the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). <\/p>\n<p>It uses a further&nbsp;19 indicators developed to assess risks specific to the renewable energy industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New benchmark assesses 16 of
