{"id":1192198,"date":"2020-06-25T08:59:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T13:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1027984"},"modified":"2020-06-25T08:59:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T13:59:00","slug":"harmony-gold-raises-200m-to-buy-anglogold-assets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1192198","title":{"rendered":"Harmony Gold raises $200m to buy AngloGold assets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harmony Gold (JSE: HAR) (NYSE: HMY) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harmony.co.za\/invest\/company-announcements\/2020\/item\/1128-results-of-placing\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said on Thursday it had raised $200 million<\/a> from a planned shares placement to partly fund its acquisition of rival AngloGold Ashanti\u2019s (NYSE: AU) (JSE: ANG) assets in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The Randfontein-based gold producer issued more than 60 million new ordinary shares&nbsp;at a price of 57.50 rand apiece on Wednesday. Harmony said it represented roughly 11% of its issued ordinary share capital before the placing.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Harmony&#8217;s acquisition will boost its gold production by about 350,000 ounces a year to more than 1.8 million ounces.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/harmony-takes-south-africas-top-gold-miner-crown-from-anglogold\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed in February<\/a> to buy AngloGold\u2019s Mponeng mine, the world\u2019s deepest gold mine, as well as its Mine Waste Solutions assets for about $300 million.<\/p>\n<p>The deal marked AngloGold\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/harmony-gold-mulls-anglogold-assets-acquisition-as-reserves-dwindle\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exit from its home country<\/a> to focus on more profitable mines in Ghana, Australia and the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>For Harmony, the acquisition will allow it to sustain growth and replace capacity currently coming from its Masimong and Unisel mines, which are running out of ore.<\/p>\n<p>It will also boost gold production by about 350,000 ounces a year to more than 1.8 million ounces.<\/p>\n<p>Harmony\u2019s chief executive officer, Peter Steenkamp,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/harmony-gold-mulls-anglogold-assets-acquisition-as-reserves-dwindle\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has repeatedly stated<\/a>&nbsp;that South Africa is its main investment target.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s gold industry, however, continues to face mounting challenges, including geological and safety aspects of extracting ore from the world\u2019s deepest mines.<\/p>\n<p>Harmony is betting on recreating the successful strategy applied after it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/harmony-gold-says-moab-khotsong-mine-purchase-to-boost-cash-flows\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bought Anglo\u2019s Moab Khotsong mine in 2017<\/a>. Half of that money has already been paid back, Steenkamp said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>End of an era<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Mponeng, the world\u2019s deepest mine, generated 265,000 gold ounces in 2018. Output from the surface operations, which extract the precious metal from ore dumps, totalled 171,000 ounces.
