Workers claimed the three victims were shot dead by security forces.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>It remains unclear what happened at SMB&#8217; mine in eastern Congo as company and unions gave different accounts.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Earlier this month, the United Nations <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/drcs-gold-worth-billions-being-smuggled-out-says-un\/\" >published a report<\/a> showing that at least 1.1 tonnes of gold mined in the DRC has been smuggled in the past year into countries along the eastern border.<\/p>\n<p>Citing accounts from several smugglers, the document noted that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/illegal-gold-trade-in-congo-still-benefiting-armed-groups-foreign-companies\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">militia continue to profit from illegal gold mining<\/a>&nbsp;in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Illicit extraction of cobalt, tin, tantalum, tungsten and coltan, which are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/program-to-monitor-congos-artisanal-cobalt-miners-expanded\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">key in the production of smart phones and other high tech devices<\/a>, has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/congo-mines-no-longer-controlled-by-warlords-and-militia-report-2-57021\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduced to a minimum<\/a>, but not eliminated, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>SMB&#8217;s mine near Rubaya, North Kivu province, has seen a spike of violent clashes between local artisanal miners and police hired to prevent smuggling.<\/p>\n<p>The company is the DRC\u2019s top exporter of coltan, a tantalum-rich metal, and also produces tantalum, cassiterite and wolframite.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Responsible sourced<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Automakers and high tech companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/apple-talks-buy-cobalt-directly-miners-report\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/soaring-cobalt-prices-force-samsung-sdi-mine-metal-old-phones\/\">Samsung<\/a> and IBM are all under pressure to show metals used in products are sourced responsibly.<\/p>\n<p>The United States passed legislation in 2010 requiring companies listed in the country to disclose where their tantalum, tin, tungsten and gold came from.
