{"id":1191978,"date":"2020-06-24T08:17:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-24T13:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1027867"},"modified":"2020-06-24T08:17:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-24T13:17:00","slug":"bhp-to-sell-australian-thermal-coal-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1191978","title":{"rendered":"BHP to sell Australian thermal coal mine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BHP (ASX, LON: BHP), the world&#8217;s largest miner, is said to have hired Macquarie Bank and JP Morgan to sell its Mt Arthur thermal coal mine in Australia, as pressure from investors and the general public to reduce its exposure to fossil fuels mounts.<\/p>\n<p>Located in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, the Mt Arthur open pit mine is the largest individual coal production site in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The operation, which supplies thermal coal used as fuel for power plants locally and internationally, is expected to sell for less than $1 billion,&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>BHP&#8217;s thermal coal business makes up a very small part of the miner&#8217;s portfolio, contributing about 3% of turnover.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>BHP has been taking several steps away from thermal coal in recent months. In April last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/worlds-top-miner-bhp-quits-global-coal-group-climate-stance\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it left the World Coal Association<\/a> (WCA) over differences on climate change. Before that, chief financial officer Peter Beaven had hinted that BHP was looking at alternatives to remove the fossil fuel from its portfolio \u201cpotentially sooner than expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beaven noted at the time the miner would rather focus on commodities that enable the&nbsp;electrification of transport and the decarbonization of stationary power, such as copper and nickel.<\/p>\n<p>Thermal coal currently makes up a very small part of\u00a0BHP\u2019s portfolio, contributing about 3% of turnover. The Melbourne, Australia-based company even said in February that if a good offer came along, it would be willing to sell.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tackling emissions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Yielding to pressure from stakeholders, BHP has\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/bhp-says-social-value-to-be-key-aspect-of-its-business-planning\/\" >committed $400 million over five years<\/a>\u00a0to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations and mined commodities.<\/p>\n<p>It has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/emissions-to-drop-6-this-year-due-to-pandemic-wont-fix-climate\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also vowed to reduce its Scope 3 emissions<\/a> \u2014 &nbsp;those generated by customers through the use of the company\u2019s commodities \u2014, which are 40 times greater than those generated by its mines and oilfields.<\/p>\n<p>BHP\u2019s move would mirror those of its main rivals, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/rio-tintos-top-investors-face-off-over-emissions-cut-plan\/\" >Rio Tinto<\/a> (ASX, LON: RIO) and Anglo American (LON:ANGLO), which&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/rio-tintos-exit-coal-pays-off-return-3-2b-sales-proceeds-shareholders\/\" >have offloaded all or part of their coal assets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/scope3emissionsreductions-1-1024x676.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1015205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/scope3emissionsreductions-1-1024x676.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/scope3emissionsreductions-1-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/scope3emissionsreductions-1-768x507.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/scope3emissionsreductions-1.jpg 1296w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Since early this year, roughly 800 financial services organizations with $118 trillion in assets under management have committed to making climate-risk disclosures about their portfolio investments. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the business case in support of decarbonization, many mining companies continue to see it as a cost rather than an opportunity \u2014 making it difficult for proponents to unlock the capital required to move forward,\u201d Tim Biggs, Mining &amp;
