{"id":1189986,"date":"2020-06-12T09:35:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-12T14:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1026944"},"modified":"2020-06-12T09:35:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-12T14:35:00","slug":"glencores-valeria-coal-mine-granted-special-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1189986","title":{"rendered":"Glencore\u2019s Valeria coal mine granted special status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s state of Queensland has granted Glencore\u2019s (LON:GLEN) A$1.5 billion ($1bn) Valeria coal mine <a href=\"http:\/\/statements.qld.gov.au\/Statement\/2020\/6\/12\/new-billiondollar-coal-mine-proposed-for-the-bowen-basin\">the status of \u201ccoordinated project\u201d<\/a>,&nbsp;which will see it fast-tracked as the nation seeks alternatives to kick start the recession-ridden economy.<\/p>\n<p>The decision will bring environmental and other assessments for the mine, expected to produce 20 million tonnes of coal annually for 35 years, under the office of the state\u2019s coordinator general.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria\u2019s expected output equals to about 4% of Australia\u2019s total coal production. That\u2019s double the size of Adani\u2019s Carmichael project, also in Queensland, was approved by the state government\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/australia-clears-adani-to-mine-one-of-the-worlds-largest-coal-reserves\/\" >in June 2019<\/a>\u00a0after a near decade-long struggle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/siemens-to-go-ahead-with-aussie-coal-mine-contract-despite-pressure\/\">with regulators and environmental protesters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Glencore\u2019s proposed Valeria mine will produce around 20 million tonnes a year of thermal and metallurgical coal, equal to about 4% of Australia\u2019s output.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Queensland\u2019s Treasurer, Cameron Dick, <a href=\"http:\/\/statements.qld.gov.au\/Statement\/2020\/6\/12\/new-billiondollar-coal-mine-proposed-for-the-bowen-basin\">said the project<\/a> is expected to support over 1,400 construction jobs and 950 full-time positions once fully operational.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s special status, he noted, would help to get new jobs happening quicker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new mine has the potential to create hundreds of new jobs as Queensland recovers from the extraordinary shock of the global coronavirus pandemic,\u201d Dick said. \u201cCoal mining has a long history in Queensland and will continue to be a major industry for many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glencore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glencore.com.au\/en\/media-centre\/News\/200612_Media-Release_Glencores-Valeria-Coal-Project-in-Queensland_FINAL.pdf\">said the move was an \u201cimportant and positive step\u201d<\/a> for its planned Valeria mine, which would extract a mix of metallurgical coal, used to produce steel, and thermal coal, needed for power generation. The amounts of each type of coal were not specified.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the company\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glencore.com.au\/en\/who-we-are\/energy-products\/valeria\/docs\/VAL-GCAA-05-AAM-REP-0001%20Rev3%20Final.pdf\">\u201cinitial advice statement\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;sent to the government in April, Valeria would cover 28,000 hectares, with a \u201cdisturbance area\u201d of 10,000 hectares.<\/p>\n<p>It will replace production from other Glencore coal operations as they near retirement, including the nearby Clermont mine.<\/p>\n<p>Glencore grabbed a 71.2% stake in the asset in 2018.
