{"id":1189399,"date":"2020-06-10T08:10:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T13:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1026577"},"modified":"2020-06-10T08:10:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-10T13:10:00","slug":"zen-graphene-ubc-okanagan-collaborate-on-department-of-national-defence-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1189399","title":{"rendered":"Zen Graphene, UBC Okanagan collaborate on Department of National Defence project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zen Graphene Solutions (TSXV: ZEN) and the Nanomaterials and Polymer Nanocomposites Laboratory at the University of British Columbia\u2010Okanagan Campus received a $200,000-award from Canada\u2019s Department of National Defence to develop electrically conductive, moulded and 3D printed graphene\/polymer nanocomposites as more versatile replacements for metallic electromagnetic shields that are currently in use.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, Zen said the company will be providing in-kind contributions of its Albany Pure materials and consultation with its technical team.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>If this initial research phase yields positive results, the Department of National Defence may choose to advance the project to Phase 2 with a $1-million grant<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Recently, the Thunder Bay-based firm started to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/zen-scales-up-graphene-production\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">engineer processes<\/a> for the manufacturing of products based on its trademarked Albany Pure Graphene, which is sourced from graphite extracted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/zen-runs-environmental-baseline-studies-ontario-graphite-project\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Albany deposit<\/a> in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>According to Zen, the new shields being developed with the UBCO team led by researcher Mohammad Arjmand will be lightweight and corrosion-resistant, as well as low-cost, easy to manufacture and with improved design options compared to current metallic shields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this collaboration, the developed conductive polymer shields will protect sensitive electronic equipment in satellites;
