{"id":1187666,"date":"2020-06-01T17:36:08","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T22:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1025794"},"modified":"2020-06-01T17:36:08","modified_gmt":"2020-06-01T22:36:08","slug":"80-of-mexico-mines-have-restarted-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1187666","title":{"rendered":"80% of Mexico mines have restarted operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About 80% of Mexico&#8217;s mining sector has restarted as the country continues to ease restrictions on miners amid the coronavirus pandemic, Francisco Quiroga, Mexico&#8217;s undersecretary of mines with the country&#8217;s Ministry of Economy, said in an interview with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/latest-news-headlines\/about-80-of-mexican-mines-have-restarted-operations-top-official-says-58849770\" >S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The country shut down the mining sector <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/mexicos-mining-halt-to-hit-silver-supply\/\" >in late March<\/a> in response to covid-19 and started to allow restarts in mid-May after it declared mining an essential service. <\/p>\n<p>Operations have started to ramp up at Newmont&#8217;s Penasquito gold mine and Alamos Gold&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/mining-in-mexico-to-restart-next-week\/\" >Mulatos gold mine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Mexico&#8217;s mining sector shut down in late March in response to covid-19 and started to allow restarts in mid-May after it declared the mining an essential service<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>On Monday, Excellon&nbsp;Resources (TSX:EXN)&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/excellon-restarts-mexico-operations-stock-rises\/\" >announced<\/a> the restart of its operations in the country, including Platosa, Mexico\u2019s&nbsp;highest-grade silver mine.<\/p>\n<p>Avino Silver &amp; Gold (TSX: ASM, NYSE:ASM)&nbsp;also <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/avino-restarts-durango-mine-shares-up\/\" >reported<\/a>&nbsp;on Monday it is starting a phased ramp-up of operational activities at its Avino mine near Durango, Mexico.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Exploration and development company Bacanora Lithium (LON:BCN)&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/bacanora-lithium-to-reopen-plant-at-sonora-project\/\" >announced<\/a> it expects to reopen&nbsp;the Hermosillo pilot plant at its flagship Sonora lithium project this month.<\/p>\n<p>Endeavour Silver (TSX: EDR)&nbsp;(NYSE: EXK)&nbsp;has&nbsp;also <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/endeavour-silver-reopens-mines-in-mexico\/\" >resumed operations<\/a>&nbsp;at its three underground silver-gold mines in Mexico. Meanwhile, Fortuna Silver&nbsp;Mines (NYSE: FSM) (TSX: FVI)&nbsp;has&nbsp;resumed operations at its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/fortuna-silvers-san-jose-mine-back-at-full-tilt\/\" >San Jos\u00e9 mine<\/a>, in Mexico\u2019s southern state of Oaxaca.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico is responsible for nearly 23% of world production of silver, churning out more than 200 million ounces last year, up from 196.6 million ounces in 2018.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mexico-silver-production-2008-2019-1024x553.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Courtesy of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ceicdata.com\/en\/indicator\/mexico\/silver-production\" >CEIC Data<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The country also has major copper and zinc mines, operated by Grupo Mexico and Southern Copper, and produces a significant amount of gold, making the mining sector responsible for about 4% of the nation\u2019s gross domestic product.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sanitary authorities have repeatedly called the mining sector the best equipped and best prepared to go back to operations,&#8221; Quiroga said in the <em>S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence<\/em> interview.<\/p>\n<p>Quiroga said Mexico&#8217;s Department of Labor would have coronavirus-specific health inspections by officials who could visit mine sites without announcing their arrival first.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They will not have a punitive focus,&#8221;
