The resumption of operations is going to be done gradually, with a first phase starting in May and ending in August.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>As of Sunday, Peru had over 42,500 confirmed cases of covid-19 and Bolivia had 1,470 cases<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>During this initial trial, companies are obligated to implement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/six-workers-at-fortuna-silver-mines-peruvian-operation-test-positive-for-covid-19\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"strict health and safety protocols (opens in a new tab)\">strict health and safety protocols<\/a> that prevent the spread of infections. Health authorities will conduct regular inspections in plants and mine sites to monitor compliance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Besides the mining sector, which is responsible for 60% of all exports in the world\u2019s No. 2 copper producer, industrial fisheries, suppliers for the agricultural sector, and the chemical, metal, forestry, paper, glass industries, among others, were allowed to restart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a similar fashion, Bolivia\u2019s Mining Minister Carlos Huallpa <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"announced (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/mineria.gob.bo\/documentos\/noticias.php?pvnoticia=1205&amp;codigo=eyJzdWIiOiIxMjM0NTY3ODkwIiwibmFtZSI6IkpvaG4gRG9lIiwiaWF0IjoxNTE2MjM5MDIyfQ\" >announced<\/a> that a multi-ministerial resolution was approved allowing private, state-owned and co-op mining operations to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"resume activities (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/bolivias-largest-mine-suspends-operations-as-virus-controls-tighten\/\" >resume activities<\/a> as of May 2, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In order to get back to work, however, companies have to send a request to the ministry asking for permission and submit the biosafety protocols that they will put in place to avoid the spread of covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>According to Huallpa, the government established that, at minimum, all sites must install disinfection chambers and have enough thermometers to check workers\u2019 temperature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The minister also said that it is mandatory to set up mobile hospitals with triage units and test employees for underlying conditions that may put them at risk of severe complications from covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Besides being an important producer of zinc, gold and silver, Bolivia belongs -together with Chile and Argentina- to what is known as the \u201clithium triangle.\u201d The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that Bolivia has 9 million tonnes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/bolivias-new-lithium-tsar-says-country-should-go-it-alone\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"identified lithium (opens in a new tab)\">identified lithium<\/a> resources buried beneath its salt flats.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Through supreme decree N&deg;
