{"id":1181805,"date":"2020-05-01T08:30:07","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T13:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1022287"},"modified":"2020-05-01T08:30:07","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T13:30:07","slug":"graphene-ink-may-be-used-to-fight-novel-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1181805","title":{"rendered":"Graphene ink may be used to fight novel coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zen Graphene Solutions (TSXV: ZEN) announced that it has launched an international collaboration with UK-based Graphene Composites to the fight covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The initiative involves the development of a potential virucidal graphene-based composite ink that can be applied to fabrics, including N95 face masks and other personal protective equipment for significantly increased protection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>In recent weeks, Zen started to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"engineer processes (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/zen-scales-up-graphene-production\/\" >engineer processes<\/a> for the manufacturing of products based on its trademarked Albany Pure Graphene, which is sourced from graphite extracted at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/zen-runs-environmental-baseline-studies-ontario-graphite-project\/\" >Albany<\/a> deposit in Ontario<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In a press release, the companies explained that once the development, testing, and confirmation of the graphene ink\u2019s virucidal ability have been completed, the ink will then be incorporated into fabrics used for PPE.<\/p>\n<p>Zen\u2019s contribution to the project is based on the synthesis of a silver nanoparticles-functionalized graphene oxide ink at its lab in Guelph, Ontario. According to the company, researchers have proven that the ink is effective in killing earlier strains of coronavirus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Testing of the substance\u2019s ability to kill SARS-CoV-2 will be conducted at Western University&#8217;s ImPaKT Facility Biosafety Level 3 lab in Ontario. In addition, the graphene ink will be tested to kill influenza A and B viruses at Biosafety Level 2 labs in the UK and US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe development of this potential covid-19 virucidal graphene ink is coming at a crucial time to provide effective PPE supplies for the safety of frontline workers and hospital staff,\u201d Francis Dub\u00e9, Zen\u2019s CEO, said in the media brief. \u201cThe current N95 masks trap the virus but don&#8217;t kill it. Our testing will demonstrate if the graphene ink is an effective virucide which would kill the virus as this could make a big difference to people&#8217;s safety.
