{"id":1181156,"date":"2020-04-28T18:10:42","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T23:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1022082"},"modified":"2020-04-28T18:10:42","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T23:10:42","slug":"silver-miners-hit-hardest-by-lockdowns-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1181156","title":{"rendered":"Silver miners hit hardest by lockdowns \u2014 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since mid-March, the response of governments worldwide to the covid-19 pandemic has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/worldwide-mining-disruptions\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"disrupted mining activities (opens in a new tab)\">disrupted mining activities<\/a> across the globe. <\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A total of 32 countries have passed partial or complete lockdown orders, leading to the temporary suspension of activities at over 1,600 mines as of April 3, though that number has since dropped down to 729 as restrictions begin to ease in certain areas, analysts at GlobalData report.<\/p>\n<p>The exempted mines are, however, still operating with reduced numbers of workers to minimize the potential spread of the virus, which is causing a slow return for an industry that has already seen production hit by restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Among the mining activities affected by covid-19, silver production has been the biggest victim, with nearly 66% of the world&#8217;s annual output still on hold. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/untitled.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1022089\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/untitled.png 602w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/untitled-300x254.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Silver miners First Majestic, Hochschild, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Hecla Mining (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/hecla-withdraws-full-year-guidance\/\" >Hecla Mining<\/a> and Endeavour Silver have all withdrawn their production guidance for 2020 in the wake of the virus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Other metals that are experiencing significant production disruptions include: uranium (32%), zinc (23.8%), platinum (19.5%), nickel (14.6%), diamond (14.4%) and copper (12.7%), according to GlobalData.<\/p>\n<p>Progress has also been halted on 23 mines under construction, including the $5.3 billion <a aria-label=\"Quellaveco copper mine (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/anglo-american-slows-peru-copper-project-construction-due-to-national-quarantine\/\" >Quellaveco copper mine<\/a> in Peru, one of the world\u2019s biggest copper mines under development. The project has an annual copper production capacity of up to 180,000 tonnes and is expected to commence operations by 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In Chile, while a lockdown is not in force, Antofagasta <a aria-label=\"has halted work (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/antofagasta-halts-expansion-at-los-pelambres-copper-mine-for-4-months\/\" >has halted work<\/a> on its Los Pelambres project and Teck Resources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/teck-halts-construction-at-quebrada-blanca\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"has suspended work (opens in a new tab)\">has suspended work<\/a> on the Quebrada Blanca Phase II mine.<\/p>\n<p>At present, lockdowns remain in force in mining jurisdictions like Peru (until May 10), Mexico (May 30), Bolivia (April 30) and Namibia (May 4).
