{"id":1178879,"date":"2020-04-17T15:28:33","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T20:28:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1020849"},"modified":"2020-04-17T15:28:33","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T20:28:33","slug":"mining-projects-to-slow-further-in-q2-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1178879","title":{"rendered":"Mining projects to slow further in Q2 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The share of global mining projects that advanced to the next stage of development has decreased from 3.8% in Q4 2019 to 2.8% in Q1 2020, and is expected to slow further in Q2 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to a new report by energy research company GlobalData.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"industry report (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globaldata.com\/\" >industry report<\/a> indicates that, with several countries entering complete lockdown, mining companies have minimized their workforce to temporarily suspend operations and development activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As of April 13, the progress of 35 mines currently under construction globally was disrupted due to such lockdowns. These projects account for around 9% of total mines under construction and around 10.5% of total capacity as measured by run-of-mine (ROM),&#8221; said Vinneth Bajaj, mining analyst at GlobalData.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eu.vocuspr.com\/Publish\/3434416\/vcsPRAsset_3434416_121357_9b5f9db8-c116-4bef-bb90-51210dc6d7b5_0.png\" alt=\"Image\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Anglo American slowed the development of its $5.3 billion Quellaveco <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"copper mine in Peru (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/mine-closures-pose-risk-to-global-copper-supply-report\/\" >copper mine in Peru<\/a>, withdrawing employees and contractors amid the country\u2019s lockdown. <\/p>\n<p>The company also temporarily put Woodsmith, its newly acquired potash project in the UK, on hold from March 27. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p> Around 76 mineral projects advanced in Q1 2020, down from the 101 projects in Q4 2019 <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In Canada, Vale initially placed its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Voisey\u2019s Bay mine on care and maintenance (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/vale-extends-care-and-maintenance-at-voiseys-bay\/\" >Voisey\u2019s Bay mine on care and maintenance<\/a> for four weeks, but has since extended this for up to three months &#8211; delaying the development of its mine expansion project and transition from open pit to underground mining. <\/p>\n<p>Similarly, in Chile, Teck Resources has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"suspended construction works at its Quebrada Blanca (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/teck-halts-construction-at-quebrada-blanca\/\" >suspended construction works at its Quebrada Blanca<\/a> Phase 2 in the wake of the country\u2019s lockdown measures. The updated feasibility study work of the Prieska copper-zinc project in South Africa is undergoing remotely, with the site being shut-down temporarily. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround 76 mineral projects advanced in Q1 2020, down from the 101 projects in Q4 2019.
