The project, to be named Thunderstone, is described as being \u201chighly<br \/>\nprospective\u201d for several commodities including gold, base metals and uranium.<\/p>\n<p>Since Bluejay applied for the granted<br \/>\nlicences, there has been an \u201cexplosion\u201d in permit submissions in south<br \/>\nGreenland, with a further 6,240 km2&nbsp;potentially being taken by other<br \/>\njuniors, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBluejay is already very familiar with this region and our technical team has several decades of combined expertise in the geology of\u00a0South Greenland. This is supported by our recent re-analysis of all available historic stream sediment samples by modern analytical techniques,\u201d chief executive, Roderick McIllree,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polaris.brighterir.com\/public\/bluejay_mining\/news\/rns\/story\/w387vjr\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">said in the statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The licences will hold no financial<br \/>\ncommitments for Bluejay, in line with the government\u2019s recent adjustment of<br \/>\nmineral exploration obligations for 2020 in response to the covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Bluejay plans to move forward with its Dundas ilmenite\u00a0project, after the governments of Denmark and Greenland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/denmark-greenland-inject-over-5m-into-bluejay-mining\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">acquired stakes in the company<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>Ilmenite is considered the most<br \/>\nimportant ore of titanium, used commercially in the production of paint,<br \/>\nadhesives and personal care products such as toothpaste.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also eying drilling&nbsp;campaigns<br \/>\nat the nickel-copper-platinum-cobalt project at Disko-Nuussuaq&nbsp;and the<br \/>\nlead-zinc-silver Kangerluarsuk deposit.<\/p>\n<p>The company aims to produce between<br \/>\n440,000 and 600,000 tonnes of high purity ilmenite by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Climate change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Miners have become increasingly interested in Greenland as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/ice-melts-greenland-become-big-sand-exporter-study\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"thawing sea ice attributed to climate change (opens in a new tab)\">thawing sea ice attributed to climate change<\/a>, opens up shipping routes and exposes mineral riches. The phenomenon, however, has the country\u2019s population divided, with some worried about the loss of traditional life-styles while others embrace development.<\/p>\n<p>Changing weather patterns has been critical to making the project viable, McIllree told <em>Financial Times<\/em> in November, as 25 years ago the location would only have been accessible to ships and for only two or three months a year.<\/p>\n<p>Greenland, an autonomous region<br \/>\nunder the Kingdom of Denmark, is the world\u2019s largest island. Americans have operated<br \/>\nan air base on the northwest coast of the island since 1943.<\/p>\n<p>It makes its own decisions regarding investments in mineral resource activities,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/greenland-embraces-mining-rush-but-wont-favour-one-country-alone-prime-minister-43629\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">including the granting of\u00a0licences<\/a>. The region recently issued more exploration and mining\u00a0licences\u00a0in a bid to diversify its economy.<\/p>\n<p>The US government has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/us-steps-up-efforts-to-limit-chinas-control-of-critical-minerals\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stepped up efforts to ensure the supply of critical minerals<\/a>&nbsp;from<br \/>\noutside China. As part of those initiatives, it recently signed a memorandum of<br \/>\nunderstanding with Greenland to conduct a hyper-spectral survey to map the<br \/>\ncountry\u2019s geology.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has also gained the<br \/>\nsupport of Australia, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/au.usembassy.gov\/white-house-statement-trump-turnbull-meeting-strengthens-alliance\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has committed to facilitate potential joint ventures<\/a>&nbsp;to<br \/>\nimprove rare earth processing capacity and reduce reliance on Chinese rare<br \/>\nearths.<\/p>\n<p>The mineral agencies of the both<br \/>\ncountries&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/australia-signs-critical-minerals-research-agreement-with-us\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed in November a research agreement<\/a>&nbsp;to quantify<br \/>\ntheir reserves of critical mineral reserves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Company has been granted two exploration licences
