{"id":1177635,"date":"2020-04-13T10:02:44","date_gmt":"2020-04-13T15:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1020129"},"modified":"2020-04-13T10:02:44","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T15:02:44","slug":"freeport-keeps-peruvian-mine-running-shuts-new-mexicos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1177635","title":{"rendered":"Freeport keeps Peruvian mine running, shuts New Mexico\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Copper giant Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE:FCX)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/investors.fcx.com\/investors\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/2020\/Freeport-McMoRan-Provides-Update-on-Cerro-Verde-Mine-in-Peru-9437496e9\/default.aspx\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">said on Monday<\/a> that&nbsp;its Cerro Verde mine in Peru was operating, though limited by the government&#8217;s extension of a state of emergency to slow the spread of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The world\u2019s largest publicly traded copper producer had temporarily placed the mine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/freeport-halts-cerro-verde-mining-due-covid-19\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">into care and maintenance last month<\/a> to comply with national measures aimed at containing the spread of covid-19. <\/p>\n<p>It has been in talks with the Peruvian government since then<br \/>\nto resume limited operations, and said it was completing steps to provide<br \/>\nadditional onsite facilities and enhanced health protocols to enable production<br \/>\nto increase.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the company had said it was suspending operations<br \/>\nat its Chino copper mine in New Mexico indefinitely due to the increasing cases<br \/>\nof coronavirus cases among its employees and the US in general.<\/p>\n<p>Chino mine, in New Mexico\u2019s southwest corner, produced 175<br \/>\nmillion pounds of copper last year, making it the company\u2019s third-largest North<br \/>\nAmerican mine by production.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the mine\u2019s employees tested positive for the virus earlier this month.
